1. My eyes did not heed the summons of passion
Back then, except to my torment

2. Do not wrong, O swords of her glances
For the eyes of my opponent wounded my heart

3. They said, why not be content with her face?
I said, I was not granted at once

4. What the first glance shed of my blood
To shed again by the next glance

5. Is it the fault of a beauty if
She was created in this form?

6. A stature like a branch growing in purity
Bearing a full moon in radiance

7. That the water of her face could almost
Extinguish the embers on her cheek

8. Taking away the minds of all people
With an intoxicating logic like coffee

9. Killing the soul but she
Kills with pleasure and delight

10. So how to avenge her murdered one
When her murder is a kind of bounty?

11. I love to be pierced by her glances
Though sharper than a blade they be

12. They paralyzed a hand that drew near her neck
And did not say "paralyzed be"

13. My blood is permitted to her, so she need not
Fear any debt in shedding it

14. Neither upon the soul, nor especially
Since justice is the mark of this state

15. None rules the religion or its people
More just than Ahmad amongst the nation

16. Al-Malik al-Nasir, the religion’s guide
Son of the noble king, lofty of purpose

17. For whom each day unfolds
Miracles recited after miracles

18. Blessed is God! How many a sign
Of glory does He reveal after a sign?

19. The exalted ones did not think a man
Could attain it from this rank

20. Nor knew that what eluded them
Is reached in this duration

21. All the kings and ways before you
Seemed slight when she saw you

22. So praise be to God for His grace
And the many boons you have from Him

23. I met kindness from you, one who
Pleases fate gently and firmly

24. I found your patronage, and found through it
Like a necklace on a beauty's neck

25. I exceeded it in thanks, to preserve it
For gratitude is like a fetter to the boon

26. Since I dwelt in your meadows, I have replaced
Hatred with what you wish of departure

27. A day with you is better for it
Than a thousand months of past ages

28. How many a stumble of fate you lifted
So it rose, grasped from its stumbling

29. Would that its fortunes be guided
Until saved from the darkness of confusion

30. You sufficed it what befell it, so it shall not
Violate what you have decreed

31. And if it desired, while held captive,
To be cast upon the carpet of humiliation

32. Take my hand until I attain satisfaction
Through the bounty I was given of strength

33. I will not leave your grasping hand
Commanding with resolve and power
