1. A heart writhing on the embers of grief,
Of an emigrant who did nothing wrong,

2. He complains, and the greatest of his complaints
Is of an injustice not done by him attributed to him,

3. The slanderers lied about him and were believed,
And from affliction, the words of a liar are believed,

4. If only we could meet after separation for a night,
That would allow for reproach, so the guilty one appears,

5. I did not think he would believe a slanderer,
Until he changed from me in ways I could not expect,

6. Strange are the people of passion, each complaining,
Of lack of loyalty, even after intimacy grows near,

7. A matter was decreed about them, so they did not accept,
The decree of the Almighty, nor could the decree be overcome,

8. So their oppression knelt on the embers of grief,
And their tears flowed like pouring rain,

9. Their enemies eulogize them - woe to those,
Whose eulogy by enemies is from their torment,

10. He said: show fortitude and avoid whom you loved,
By staying away, if by staying away from him you avoid,

11. So I replied: my heart is not like your hearts,
Blind, deaf to love, ignorant of sunset's glow,

12. If one could find the like of whom I loved,
I would not lose control or patience because of passion,

13. But he is matchless, do you see,
A moon rising while the horizon stars set?

14. If any consolation occurred in my heart,
I would not consent to a heart that accompanies,

15. Whoever does not taste love is an animal,
Among the herd of cattle he is counted,

16. The love of beautiful youths is a noble trait,
No sound opinion sees it as wrong,

17. Did not the Prophet Muhammad with them appear,
In the pleasures of this world he delighted?

18. Is not Yahya, king of the earth,
Whose mention among them brings joy?

19. Al-Ṭāhir bin al-Ashraf, the honored king
Above whose elevated office no office is elevated,

20. Kindnesses were made easy for him, though they
Are difficult for others, arduous,

21. He did not desire something unattainable,
Except he saw nothing of it was far,

22. Think not, because his desire was far,
They limited him to half a month to attain it,

23. Never! If he let loose the reins of the sky,
No single day from him would be veiled,

24. But God wanted to show his patience,
And some people be struck in what they earn,

25. I mean the ignorant whose devil deceived,
With the lightning of greed which is deceptive lightning,

26. He said: seize the opportunity, his greed drove him,
This is impregnable, this is the desired,

27. So his hands were active and he bought it with what they desired,
Greedily seeking profit to increase his earnings,

28. He did not heed the armies accompanying,
The armies succeeding and lightning that terrifies,

29. And his devil friend laughing, fleeing
From him and from madness that astonishes him,

30. So he forcibly seized him and he wept,
Regretting his money, oozing drool,

31. If not for his women wailing the deceased,
Crying for possessions lost lamenting him,

32. Be not surprised - a thousand coins to you
Is as one weeping for a thousand counted,

33. He sleeps gnashing his right hand in regret, Oh!
Chewing his palm, while his heart burns,

34. Do not grieve, you are not the first to hope
For profit but miss the capital sought,

35. Console yourself, for tomorrow you will forget
What you have lost in what you still gain,

36. Greed without insight deceived you,
And over greed, how many heads are lost!

37. You entered your people without a way out foreseen,
Until they were trapped and, like you, snared.

38. Strange is one who cast them into a pit,
Among them not a man of reason belonged!

39. If not for Yahya being there, they would have been killed
By their swords the day of captivity and crucified!

40. But a mercy from him delivered them,
After breaking, with no cracks branching out,

41. He gave them life after you had cast them
Into destruction, while you then slumbered,

42. You raid while hanging on a rock,
To the east in his kingdom and the west!

43. You made your soul aspire beyond its fate,
So you sought, poor soul, what cannot be sought.

44. Whoever thought the sea not beyond his ankles,
In his foolishness, examples like you are given.

45. So get news of a day in which you will not smell desire,
From what will constrain you, narrowing your doctrine,

46. You who sought destruction for yourself
And made it the target of intentional aim,

47. How many strove to hunt but snares intercepted them,
By which at night they twist and turn!

48. It was not ill-omened for you, so beware,
The clouds of affliction pouring upon you tomorrow,

49. The money is plundered, and after it,
Your souls, in little time, will be plundered.

50. Take refuge in Yahya and preserve your souls,
Perhaps by that the written decree will be erased.

51. O Lord, Yahya is your deputy in the earth,
And caliph about whom no doubt in You arises,

52. So aid him, O my Lord, and perpetuate his kingdom,
To see the sons of his sons riding mounts!

53. And unite in harmony from him the harmony of loved ones,
The nights for him counting and reckoned.
