1. By God, the slanderer who conveyed that tale was untrue
When he claimed affections had dried and my heart was at peace

2. Though behind you my hopes may follow
My only hope is my love for you replaced

3. I envy not that I adore you
But that my love became exemplary

4. Gently, for my love is mine and union is theirs
Love alone without union is fruitless

5. Nor does absence make my love for you fade
Though the slanderers scheme, their scheming is in vain

6. You and I, my desire is such a difficult need
When time demands, it being delayed

7. If I forget it one day, existing severed
It awakens seeking to rejoin what was split

8. As for the rejections, my soul cannot believe
From the beloved what was said or done

9. I, the lover, if I do not reciprocate
With love for love, how can I reciprocate at all?

10. It is enough humiliation for the slanderers
To ascribe themselves where I am engrossed

11. My love sickness and I, what is it to my body?
If He who would cure the longing one willed, he would be just

12. Neither is my heart obedient, nor is passion in my control
Leave my heart to give love what it asked

13. For I am not the first slain by the sword of love
I have examples in love before me, those killed

14. I hoped for the furthest extent of your affection
Today, I am content with what I attained

15. Estrangement though I am blameless, only fates decreed
With the allotment of an unjust judge who did not deliver equity

16. I am your prisoner, so be generous hosts
To one you captured, as you were generous hosts

17. Al-Nasir the noble king, their worries
Make distant lands near, as you unroll the registers

18. One who does not seize opportunities in his respites
Nor device to console his bitterness

19. You do not see him, when judgments slow
Quickly reaching to attain what he seeks

20. Fate is too mean, in his esteem
To see joy, or to see distress

21. It rewards the sinners with benevolence and changes them
For the good they have done with what they did

22. When the sinner is reminded of his wrong
And the good he received for it, he is ashamed

23. He wishes to ransom with his soul
His slippers, leave his slippers when appeased

24. Virtues most high, surpassing all mankind's
Who hopes to attain what is gone is abandoned

25. A lively face and manners to match
Speech intelligible, knowing no lapses

26. In war and peace, he meets those who ask
With a sea, and if stirred, a sturdy mountain

27. More excellent than the tidings that descend, with which
The prisoner's shackles are removed, then the robes worn

28. His bright face is best when seen
After poverty that deprived the afflicted of sleep

29. I reckon he who envies me by night
Conceals from you, walks gloating, disputing

30. He saw your overlooking his deceit
And thought it allowable to accept

31. You know us better than we know ourselves
You see who understands and who is ignorant

32. By you I learned and in you I was raised
For you I remained, on you relying

33. You are my place, though you send another
And my guidance to rectitude, if you send another

34. I love you with a knowing love, so if they weighed
The love of others against my love for you, it would not equal

35. If we divided by the measure of love status
I would be given loftiness, and others, lowliness

36. If you could see me at night raising my hands
Praying to the Merciful, imploring

37. I learned I was alone in my love for you
But fate refused to satisfy hope

38. Not by my choice, but by compulsion, has my fellowship
Been severed, and I remained bearing the touch of harm

39. Were it not for good tidings from you that comfort me
Affliction would have treated me other than it did

40. When I remember you the world's turner
I was certain that to reclaim it preceded

41. You were a sea that made us forget the rivers
Thirst, and forget that barrenness

42. You remained dictating the world's beauties to us
By what you did, adorning its neck with jewels

43. Criticizing whatever aspect it inclined from you
For a glance that straightens its leaning
