1. My share of you is remoteness after remoteness
And nearness is aversion and estrangement

2. And towards you every day I have a messenger
Who brings me from you each day a rejection

3. And my heart is content with you in both states
For my knowledge that I have no alternative to you

4. And none like me when I conceal
A heart that ends up loving whom it loves

5. On my head and eyes the darkness of India
I was content with all that you did O India

6. So say to those who blame me "Hush!" For between me
And hearing what you dictate is a barrier

7. Take it easy on me in love O India
For my patience for your long estrangement has no continuity

8. Nor do I have the power to end my longing
Nor is my heart strong against passions

9. May you be softened by the nights O India
And a promise of union be fulfilled

10. And may my eyes enjoy the meadows of beauty
And the anguish of my heart be extinguished

11. How long will this estrangement and rejection continue
Is there no end to estrangement and separation?

12. If I said "Your abandoning me has saddened me"
And your heart became harsh, it is unfeeling

13. And keeping a promise is of the nobility of natures
So why does a commitment not last with you?

14. What a pity for a time that has passed
And nights that will not return

15. May Allah bring together India and me
In His satisfaction as I wish
