1. Your place in my heart is secure
And your love is guarded

2. None can take your place in my heart
So that wealth or children may covet it

3. Your aloofness has filled me with separation
Inflicting it without cause

4. Restrain if my eyes shed tears
When those who love them look

5. And hide my emaciation under my clothes
When the fat ones gloat over it

6. Ask the night about me - did it lose sleep over me?
Did an eye stay awake or eyelids close?

7. I have tied my eyes to the starry Pleiades
And harbored hopes through them

8. Lovers! How miserable the one whose lover
Deems his torment trivial

9. You who have the sapling of love, save it
Before the branches lose all moisture

10. I wetted it so it would soften with the water of my patience
The pure liquid of your pleasure does not soften

11. I fulfilled for you without obliging you
One who betrays has avoided betrayal

12. Ask about me the one I betrayed among them
He will answer while the talk causes anguish

13. Ahmad gave them the cup of death
And I said there when my hand was paralyzed

14. There lies the clear victory and triumph
And sons with whom eyes find contentment

15. So thank you O son of Ismail thank you
For hopes in God have proven you true

16. Your leadership has appeared to all creation
An appearance whose dawn is brilliantly clear

17. I'm amazed by one whose fancies mislead him
About you though certainty has dispelled all doubt

18. He reckons your sword has left him
Free while he's still trapped in its blade

19. He came to hunt ignorantly around your sanctuary
Evil is the nest of the hunter

20. He sees though shortsighted that the land
Has come closest to him it can be

21. He betrayed and crossed the desert perfidiously
The desert is the stronghold most impregnable

22. He who swiftly pursued him forced him back
Unjustly seeking aid through betrayal

23. And called out desperately for help
From one whose heart hides a festering sickness

24. So the redeemer of every wretch responded
Punishing one who betrays for his crime

25. Not for foolhardiness did they attack but
Eyes are blinded when fate's writ comes due

26. My lions made them carrion
We were such and soon you shall be

27. Their mountain goats were wild beasts
That smash what faces them to bits

28. They thought the lofty citadel their refuge
But from Ahmad can fortresses give refuge?

29. Woe to whoever lingered among them
When the mill of war began its grinding

30. The swords of India truly ate their flesh
Though their hoofs were but clay

31. Not even a tithe can reckon those my lions
Destroyed among the worthless ones, not a tenth

32. Only new meadows can heal the heart
When their debts are collected with sharp blades

33. Unleash them when fortune shifts
Deny their eyes the chance to gather

34. Take from their deeds crowns of pride
That give radiance and whiten brows

35. Raise over the stars' horizon their
Bright banners and moons turned bloody

36. The meadows never smiled until
Clouds wept over them, ever ready

37. I protected the glory of great deeds with greater ones
And protected their honor inviolate

38. No youth rails when ignorance opposes you
Those are your lionesses dripping pure madness

39. Obey, o rebels, for they have knelt
With anklets round the neck of the doomed refractory one

40. Take refuge in submission, for their spears
Shadow over which no complaint can be voiced

41. Most generous and glorious of kings are you
Above all, none is higher or more eminent

42. When the Trustworthy is named, you know best
That Muhammad al-Shumaysi is the trustee

43. He is your friend when no friend remains
And your cheek when cheeks tremble

44. He protects you himself from all evil
As eyelids protect the eye from grit

45. If boys were tested for their limbs
Muhammad would be the right eye

46. Upon him shines radiance of your good fortune
Nearly revealing to the beholder what lies within

47. In your pure shade he has restful lodging
And from your clouds the flowing spring

48. While you are for him and the world entire
The confirmer and sustainer within it

49. Cease then to pour for him glories
And gifts, though precious, are trivial

50. He protects you from every trouble
As eyelids protect the eye
