1. To how much did you persist in arrogance and heedlessness
And how much is this sleep without awakening

2. Your life has gone, one hour of it you could buy
With the fullness of the heavens and earth, a great loss

3. Do you spend it in the love of she
Who God refused to equate with a gnat

4. And you are content in happy life with crumbs
While the highest assembly lives the life of beasts

5. O pearl thrown amongst garbage
And jewel sold for the lowest price

6. With what remains do you buy foolishness?
And wrath with pleasure, and fire with paradise

7. Are you enemy or friend to yourself
For you inflict every tribulation upon it

8. And if an enemy did to you some of what
You did, you would show it some mercy

9. You sold it cheaply though it had claim over you
And by this it was to you untrue

10. So woe to you, have some honor, do not expose it
In front of people, if you are son of a noble mother

11. For before it is a stand and scroll
That counts each mustard seed grain against it

12. The great delusions of the world you burdened it with
Dealing with those counseling it with deception

13. If it comes to you, you spurn it, and if it does good
It does bad, and if it is pure, expect murkiness

14. And if it attained the wealth of Qarun in it
It would only get a mouthful for you and a rag

15. And if it gave you possession of a kingdom in it
Would not the hands of death take it from your grasp?

16. So leave it and its people, let them tell tales, and take
Yourself from it, for it is all spoils

17. Do not gloat in it for a fleeting joy
That returns as lasting sorrows upon you

18. For your life in it, a thousand years then gone
Is as your life in it for some days and a night

19. Take to what benefits you of piety
For you are in great heedlessness and neglect

20. Gatherings of God’s remembrance prohibit you to see
One remembering God there, weak in faith

21. When they begin, you shuffle standing
Your stance as if for some purpose

22. And if it were idle chatter or suspicious talk
You would listen intently like a lion to prey

23. You pray without heart, such a prayer
Would make a youth liable for punishment

24. Remaining unaware though completed
Increasing out of precaution, rak’ah by rak’ah

25. Before this you doubted its foundation
So you repeated intention upon intention

26. Woe to you, you know whom you address heedlessly
And before whom you bow without humility

27. Speaking to Him distractedly, we worship
Turned to other than Him without need

28. And if He returned to your whispered prayer but a glance
You would seethe at Him and others

29. Are you not ashamed before the King to see
Your turning from Him, O ignoble one

30. A prayer performed, God knows that by
Your action this obedience is like sin

31. And uglier than it that it signals
To the pretender some affectedness

32. And that arrogance seizes you also that it
Contains such ostentation and reputation

33. Your sins in acts of worship are many
If counted, they would suffice you against any slip

34. Your path is to seek God’s forgiveness for them
And avoid the sin through repentance

35. So O worker for the Fire, your soft flesh
Try it baked at noonday heat

36. And a degree in the sting of hornets flowing
Upon the sting of serpents great there

37. For if you cannot endure, then woe to you, what
Led you to anger the Lord of creation?

38. To confront Him with wrongs by night
And dawn in garb of devotion and chastity

39. While you plot against Him the worst
With the ignorance and malice you harbor

40. You say with disobedience 'my Lord is Forgiving'
True, but Forgiving by His will

41. And your Lord is Sustainer as He is Forgiving
So why do you not believe equally in both?

42. For you seek pardon without repentance
And hope for provision only through scheming

43. Though He has vouched for provision Himself
For all, and not vouched for all with paradise

44. So you do not settle for striving for what He guaranteed you
And neglecting the duties He tasked you with

45. Erroneously opining at times and good at others
According to what desire rules in the matter

46. My God, do not take us to account for our sins
And do not humiliate us, look upon us with mercy

47. And take us by our forelocks to You, and grant us
Certainty dispelling all doubt and suspicion

48. My God, guide us among those You have guided, and take us
To the truth by an even path

49. And let our occupation from all occupations and cares
And desires from all cares and desires be You

50. And bless without end a prayer upon the one
You made the seal of prophecy by

51. And his family, companions all together, and followers
And their followers from all mankind and jinn
