1. With a supple, slender figure she sways
Like the sun, cupbearer of the goblet

2. When the breeze plays with her braids
She captivates hearts with her sleepy eyes

3. The beauty of the gardens, the light of her brow
Makes lamp and wick unnecessary

4. She is cold to her lover though he loves her
The fragrance of musk still generous after neglect

5. She gives you intimacy then spurns you at times
Like the roebuck, coy with every flirt

6. You spent your stock of patience in loving her
And forsaking my passion for her, my friends

7. Until from pining for her, those who saw me
Could not recognize me - how the lover suffers!

8. So if I'm taken by time through love of her
And distance myself from my country and people

9. Then I will complain of her to the immaculate King
Son of the Most Virtuous, the Abbasid

10. The peerless Sultan, more generous than heaven
With valor, awe, and power

11. Of eminent station, pride, and distinction
Eloquence, rhetoric, and uprightness

12. And noble deeds, abundant merit, and brilliance
And virtues built on excellent foundations

13. He rose above the best of men and their glories
Purified of all blemish and baseness

14. His hand surpasses the clouds, and has never ceased
To console the deprived of gifts with kindness

15. Through him, fortunate Yemen was cleansed
Of the taint of every despicable, slanderous hypocrite

16. His generosity made forgotten the generosity of past
Descendants of Marwan or Abbas

17. He brought the animals and mountains to life
After stillness and fear of devastation

18. He planted glory in them, and his planting
Bore fruit, more generous than any master planter

19. His formidable manner and might
Make unnecessary many guards and attendants

20. If all dominions were like him
No poverty would exist among the people
