1. When my friends turn envious and abandon me,
No charm can help me, and no reproach avails.

2. Enmities may cease and hearts find peace again,
But never an envier's heart towards you prevails.

3. Though they have struggled with their soul's desire,
Their souls have overcome them and prevailed.

4. They wish - had not their souls ruled over them -
To please and satisfy the Lord of all.

5. Their souls' caprice makes them boil while with me,
Though seeing them, you'd think 'gainst me they're mailed.

6. Men of merit have, since Adam's line began,
Faced war unending till the present day.

7. To them I send a morning dove of love,
While in the dark they have attacked like creeping snakes.

8. Gently, friends, to him whose only arms
Are malice and hatred, show love and care.

9. But I have only what my God decreed,
No other trespass against you to declare.

10. No hatred has the tailor for his king -
Does clothier chide monarch that raised him high?

11. Nay, but he's tempted to accuse me falsely,
Slandering and libeling me with his lies.

12. O noble son of Ishmael, none like you
In East or West the wide world occupies!

13. Reproach not the foot that stumbles in your path -
He is still of your party and side allied.

14. No, by God! He is not tempted by the love
Of those who have weighed and measured me aside.

15. Oaths do I swear, each binding on the next,
To refute his claim and cast his lies aside:

16. The tailor seeks no man above you to befriend,
Nor leans his heart towards any at your side.

17. His only goal was to oppose me, though,
Prophets and Books condemn his turn aside.

18. He picked sayings that fit his wished-for view,
Praising these, enjoying blame for me supplied.

19. Blinded by passion, deaf to ruin and loss ahead,
His eager hearing lost to truth so dignified.

20. Ignoring where we're instructed by our Lord
And by the path the Prophet glorified.

21. My love in God is for all good they've done;
Their slander and libel by me are decried.

22. Pages for them I fill with their merits fair,
Their deeds the books, while mine the pen applied.

23. So the tailor has no fault towards you now,
Nor wrong in what he proffered me beside.

24. By God, I've pardoned fully his trespasses,
All that against me he has testified.

25. As for what's between the Lord and him alone -
That case the Judge Eternal will decide.

26. God has vast clemency for all His slaves,
Forgiving errors, might He be defied.

27. You have forbearance when you've power to crush,
Clemency and pardon overriding pride.

28. You are he whose heart God has made merciful,
When from wrath your strength cannot be denied.

29. To intercede I come, in essence pleading
For grace from your hands that the clouds do hide.

30. Intercede for him - accept my interceding!
How many a slave by his Lord is deified!

31. Take his hand - you and those behind restore him,
Safe, unreproached, unchided to your side.
