1. Reconsider the story that does not veil
Nothing is concealed from it or obscured

١. أعد نظرا في قصة ليس تحجب
فلا يتوارى عنه شيء مغيب

2. Your view does not come from deviation or passion
And your matter is God's matter, nothing deviates it

٢. فرأيك لا يؤتى من الزيغ والهوى
وأمرك أمر الله ما عنه مذهب

3. By my life, the numbers of my enviers have multiplied
A child envies his father for his generosity to him

٣. لعمري لقد كثرت أعداد حسدي
بجود عليه يحسد الولد الاب

4. And you granted me favors which changed my brother
So his heart has become inflamed against me

٤. وقلدتني النعما التي غيرت أخي
علي فأمسى قلبه يتلهب

5. And I have come to not fear my enemy as I fear
My friend, nor the one I was closest and most intimate with

٥. وأصبحت لا اخشى عدوي كخشيتي
صديقي ولا من كنت أدنى وأصحب

6. According to what a young man is given, so is he envied
And most pleased with him are angry and indignant

٦. على قدر ما يؤتى الفتى يحسد الفتى
وأكثر من يرضى عليه ويغضب

7. So wonder at me and at them, though indeed
For the likes of this, the astonished is astonished

٧. فواعجبا مني ومنهم وإنه
لمن مثل هذا يعجب المتعجب

8. Yesterday I was praised among them for my righteousness
And virtue was attributed to me and lineage assigned

٨. لقد كنت فيهم أمس يثنى بصالح
علي ويعزي الفضل نحوي وينسب

9. But when your blessings shaded me with their clouds
And I began to revel in your bounties

٩. فلما تغشاني نداك بسيبه
وأصبحت في نعمائكم أتقلب

10. False speech multiplied from them
And the snares of scheming were set up

١٠. تكاثر في القول بالزور منهم
وبت وأشراك المكائد تنصب

11. I have no fault to them except your blessings
And I am not at fault for the favors that came from you

١١. وما لي سوى نعماك ذنب إليهم
وما أنا في نعما أتت منك مذنب

12. Yet I could, if I wished, clarify their excuse
For everything has causes that cause it

١٢. على أنني لو شئت أوضحت عذرهم
فللشيء أسباب بهن تسبب

13. You have named me among the noble through your blessings
So I have disturbed them and contended with people I used to avoid

١٣. سما بي على الأكفا نداك ففقتهم
وزاحمت قوما كنت عنهم أنكب

14. So I have no choice but to have estrangement in their hearts
Which will stay with them a little, then depart

١٤. فلا بد لي من وحشة في صدورهم
تقيم قليلا عندهم ثم تذهب

15. To God and the rightly-guided King I complain
Of the tribulations of time which tosses and turns

١٥. إلى الله والملك الممهد أشتكى
خطوب زمان صرفها يتقلب

16. And I do not complain except an incapable one
Pounces upon the Capable, for whom pouncing is easy

١٦. وما أشتكى إلا توثب عاجز
على قادر سهل عليه التوثب

17. He is jealous of my honor so I have become abased
And he has reviled me though there is no cause

١٧. أغار على عرضي فصرت كهيم
وأوسعني سبا وما ثَم موجب

18. And he has sent against me a loose tongue
Confidently, thinking I will not respond

١٨. وأرسل في شتمي لسانا ذليقة
على ثقة من انني لا أجوب

19. Had he been ignorant I would have excused him
But how, when the man is aged and experienced?

١٩. ولو كان غمرا جاهلا لعذرته
وكيف به والمرء كهل مجرب

20. And suppose I do not seek refuge in answering him
And I incline towards the path of misguidance

٢٠. وهب أنني ما استجير جوابه
وأني عن نهج الغواية أرغب

21. Do I not have sanctity with the rightly-guided King
That would restrain the hands of enemies from me?

٢١. أما لي بالملك الممهد حرمة
ترد يد الأعداء عني وتذهب

22. And suppose I have deviated from the King's path
While generosity is nearer to me

٢٢. وهب أن لي من خطة الملك جانبا
بعيداً وان الجود مني أقرب

23. Do you not know that the King judges for his adversary
Against himself with justice, no right is lost?

٢٣. ألم تدر ان الملك يقضي لخصمه
على نفسه بالحق لا حق يذهب

24. And whoever executes judgment with justice for people
Against himself has become to be hoped for and feared

٢٤. ومن كان يمضي الحكم بالحق للورى
على نفسه أمسى يرجى ويرهب

25. I have raised my hand from complaining about a just ruling
For he sees the right of the virtuous as more deserving and obligatory

٢٥. رفعت يد الشكوى على حكم عادل
يرى حق أهل الفضل أولى وأوجب

26. To a King who gives knowledge its rights
When the ignorant turn away from it and shun

٢٦. إلى ملك يعطى المعارف حقها
إذا أعرض الجهال عنها وأضربوا

27. I have entrusted him to the bosom of the Caliphate and the heights
Successors who raise them to glorious descent

٢٧. نمته إلى حجر الخلافة والعلا
خلائف تنميهم إلى الفخر يعرب

28. An Imam whose justice has encompassed the land
So through him the nearest and furthest are equal

٢٨. إمام هدى عم البرية عدله
ففيه استوى أقصاهم والمقرب

29. How often a passion for truth has disciplined him
To educate with ideas one who is not disciplined

٢٩. فكم عصبت للحق منه سجية
تؤدب بالأفكار من لا يؤدب

30. So clothe me in the favors which are a liability upon me
Do not clothe me in them, they cannot be stripped

٣٠. فالبسني النعما التي هي ذمة
علي لا بسيها أنها ليس تسلب

31. Your hands have taught me to seek the heights
So I have no desire except for the noble with you

٣١. أياديك قد علمتني طلب العلا
فما لي سوى العلياء عندك مطلب

32. And I have in you many abundant hopes
And none know, O God, but that I am steadfast in them

٣٢. ولي فيك آمال كثير عديدها
وما أنا فيها يعلم الله أشعب

33. You have remained for us an impenetrable fortress
We flee the enemies to it and take refuge

٣٣. بقيت لنا حصنا منيعا من الاذى
نفر من الأعدا إليه ونهرب
