1. Exquisite elegance adorns its attributes
Approaching me from the sacred abode

2. More soothing than love on a summer's day
And healing for an impassioned heart

3. It asks about desires in the deserts
And something that evokes the taste of dreams

4. This is seen only through hearing
And sight of the eye is the cure for passions

5. It slumbers, being of delicate frame
And keeps vigil, an essence among people

6. It was not elevated in this lowly world for merit
Above the Exalted, but for taking a stand

7. It captured bodies not by forceful seizure
Nor brought souls to life from the dove-cote

8. The young man accompanies it at times
And at times faces rejection without shame

9. For all things have their moments, so one who
Misses them will be liable to blame

10. What it tells of contraction and expansion
Is the work of a Mighty One, not some worthless men

11. For them, not every day brings a beloved
Not even every year, for their hopes are slim

12. The best thing coming to man unbidden
Arriving without toil or worry

13. It acts, but not of what is counted
Among categories of speech

14. Of its motions are noun and predicate
Conjoining its being after integration

15. Its seven letters synonymous with five
Three without alif or laam

16. Its relation to its essence is very authentic
To the reservoir of love in us and the rabble

17. Of the sons of Jabir it was most deserving
So its sons are not from the sons of the clouds

18. Take its answer which intentionally misses not
If others miss in intentions take it as guide

19. For I have given its description by name and attribute
Explained at the start and end of my ode

20. I recited it when it came to me
So understand it before it is complete

21. But I will follow with a riddle
And will not make its goal remote for you

22. What thing gives the heart pain from it
That grieves every sorrowful oppressed one?

23. It harms as it benefits, a trait
The generous boast of among people

24. Hollow in essence, but manifest
In solemn attributes among the generous

25. It has two faces: a scowling face
And a delighted face smiling at you

26. With it, scholars and virtuous are content
No sins accrue to them from it

27. And for the devil it has a true ally
So grasp the contradiction in my speech

28. Permitted for me, upon you prohibited
So grasp the wonder of the permitted prohibited!

29. It dies among people at times and lives
A life that may lead to the baths

30. Recently acquainted with you, grasp it
