- أجد يا راهبا سعياBe earnest in your striving, O monk,
- أجيدي المدح ناظمتي أجيديExcel in praise, my muse, excel,
- أحاول في عمري من الدهر راحةI seek, in my lifetime, some respite from time.
- أحب الله مريم في البراياGod loved Mary among created beings,
- أحببتكم يا مؤمنين محبةI have loved you, O believers, with a love
- إحذر فديتك كبريا نفس سمتBeware, may I be your ransom, the pride of a soul risen high.
- إحذر لسانك إن جلست منادماGuard your tongue if you sit as a boon companion.
- احقد على الشيطان إن كنت راهباHate Satan if you are a monk;
- أحن إلى الوادي المقدس رغبةI yearn for the holy valley, with longing
- أخ ثقفته في كل فنA brother whom I schooled in every art,
- أخا ودي عليك ضممت قلباO brother of my affection, I have enfolded you in a heart,
- أخفت بمنظري كلا فأجرىI frightened everyone with my appearance, and each shed
- أدركت شأوك فاتق الأسواءYou have reached your limit; beware of evils.
- أدعو بمريم في ضري فتنقذنيI call upon Mary in my distress, and she rescues me.
- إذا أطراك إنسان بمدحٍIf someone extols you with praise,
- إذا المرء لم تدنس من الإثم نفسهIf a person's soul is not defiled by sin,
- إذا تديرت ديرا تحت رهبنةIf you settle in a monastery under a monastic rule,
- إذا رماك الدهر في بلدةIf time casts you into a town,
- إذا شب الصغير وفيه شرIf the youth grows mischievous,
- إذا كان رب العز أعلاك موضعاIf the Lord of glory has raised you in station,
- إذا كانت الأبرار في ذات ربهمIf the righteous, in the essence of their Lord,
- إذا ما رأينا آدما وفعالهIf we see Adam and his deeds
- أذكرت مسكا من مديحك صائكاYou brought to mind fragrant musk from praise of you,
- أذوب إذا رأيت يسوع يوماI melt if ever I behold Jesus
- أراد ربك إرسال ابنه فأتىYour Lord willed to send His Son, and so He came
- أراك غني الفضل تنتهر البوساI see you rich in virtue, rebuking misery,
- أرى الدهر لا يبقي قديما ومحدثاI see time spares neither old nor new,
- أرى الشيطان يرمينا بحربEnglish translation unavailable
- أرى الصبر صبرا عند إثم وإنماI see patience as patience in sin, yet
- أرى جسمنا يحتاج قوت حياتهI see that our body needs sustenance to keep it alive,
- أزل يا شقيق الروح مني بقيتيRemove, O soul's brother, what remains of me.
- أسعد بمن أضحى ذميما مهملاHow blessed is one who has become reviled and cast aside,
- أسلاف سلامكم أم خطابIs your greeting aged wine, or eloquent speech?
- إسمع أخي خطاب أم الله ماHear, my brother, the speech of the Mother of God
- أشكو إلى الله من لاح بليت بهI complain to God of a censurer with whom I have been afflicted,
- أشواق حب الله ما أخمدتThe yearnings of love for God have not been quenched
- أعانق من فوق الصليب مخلصيI embrace the one upon the cross—my Savior.
- أفأي عين لا ترف وتدمعWhat eye, then, would not flutter and shed tears,
- أفنظم در ما أره نفيساIs this, then, a string of pearls—how precious I find it—
- اقطع بحزمك غصن الضر مبتكراCut, with firm resolve, harm’s branch at the outset,
- أقوت عهودهم فأين ذماميTheir covenants lie desolate—what, then, of my pledged honor?
- أقول لمغرور أتاني مبرهناI say to a conceited man who came to me offering proof

- الله قد خلق الإنسان مرتسماGod has created man, imprinted
- إلهي كن لي حيث عدلك حاكمMy God, stand by me where Your justice rules,
- إلى الله أشكو شر نفس أثيمةTo God I complain of the evil of a sinful soul,
- إلى كم أسوق القلب في حب مريمTo how much do I drive my heart in love of Miriam
- إليك أضرع في مدحٍ خصصتِ بهTo you I plead in praise reserved for you.
- اليوم تخفق دون أرباب الهدىToday there flutter before the masters of guidance
- اليوم يخفق كل نجم مرجفToday every trembling star quivers
- أما وأبيك أرماني زمانيIndeed, by your father, my times have afflicted me
- أماتت مريم الشهوات عنهاMary put her passions to death,
- أمان وإيمان قويم يدلناTrustworthiness and upright faith show us
- أمانا لقلب طال فيه اعتناؤهSafety to a heart whose concern has long endured;
- أمانة مريم العذراء كانتThe Virgin Mary's integrity prevailed
- أمذكري زمن الصباO you who remind me of the days of youth,
- أمسى الغبي من الصلاح عقيماThe fool has become barren of virtue,
- أمكرديج زد فضلاO Makkardij, increase in excellence;
- إن أبهى العصور بالإطلاقIndeed, the most splendid of ages, without exception,
- إن الإله قدير في تصرفهIn God's will there's ample scope and space
- إن البتولة مريما قد كللتIndeed, the Virgin Mary has been crowned
- إن الذي تخشاه أول وهلةIndeed, what you fear at the very first moment,
- إن الذي ترك الثراء الأفخراIndeed, he who forsook the most splendid wealth
- إن الطبيعة يا أخي لم تعطناIndeed, nature, my brother, has not given us
- إن العواقب أربع إن جئتهاIndeed, the last things are four; if you approach them

- أنام وقلبي للبلا متهجدI sleep while my heart is awake to anguish
- أنحلت يا دمع جسمي فارفقن بهYou have wasted my body, O tears; so be gentle with it.
- إني ودينك يا من جاد بالبعثIndeed, by your faith, O you who bestowed resurrection,
- أهل الفنى يتمسكون حقيقةMortals truly cling
- أوائل السهد أقصى لذة الوسنThe beginnings of bliss are like the highest pleasure,
- أورت بي الشهوات نار زنادهاDesires kindled within me the fire of their flint,
- أولى مسيري ذا الأمانThis safety was granted to my journey
- أيا أغنياء الروح صونوا كنوزَكمO you who are rich in spirit, guard your treasures;
- أيا أم المخلص لن تزاليO Mother of the Savior, you will never cease to be
- أيا ضابطي شرعِ الكنيسة عنوةO you who enforce the Church's law by force,
- أيا من قد رأى نصبيO you who have seen my suffering,
- أيا من يسوس الجسم خوف انهدامهO you who tend the body for fear of its collapse,
- أيا وامقي ألبكر مريم لا تنواO lovers of the Virgin Mary, do not falter.

- بها أسرار إبن الله تمتThrough her the mysteries of the Son of God were fulfilled.
- بئس الزمان المرتدي بشرارWretched is the age, clothed in its evildoers,
- بيني وبين المبدعين مراميBetween me and the heretics lie my aims.
- تأمل مريما والشوق فيهاContemplate Mary, with longing within her;
- تب إنما الأعمار برق خلبRepent: lifetimes are nothing but deceptive lightning,
- تبا لمتورط في إثمه ورطاWoe to one deeply entangled in his sin!
- تبا لمجد باطلA curse upon vain glory,
- تبرأت العذراء من كل وصمةThe Virgin was free of every blemish
- تجددي تجدديBe renewed, be renewed,
- تدعو محبيها بصوت أمانةShe calls to those who love her with a voice of sincerity:
- تذكر الموت موت فاستعد لهRemembering death is a death; so prepare for it
- تقول البكر مريم في علاهاMiriam the Virgin in her sublime says
- تكللت يا سلطانة الأرض والسماYou are crowned, O queen of earth and heaven,
- تمازج في قلبي الصبابة والشجوArdent longing and sorrow have mingled in my heart.
- تنبه دهري من عهود معاهديMy fortune was roused by the bygone days of my familiar haunts,
- تنكب العالم الغرار محترزاShun the deceitful world, remaining wary,
- توق يا راهبا خبثا تضاعفهBeware, O monk, of wickedness you compound
- ثق إنما الأحزان سبك ضيقTrust: sorrows are but a constricting refinement,
- جاء المشيب وقد لاحت بيارقهGray hair has come, its banners already appearing;
- جربت كل مهند ذي رونقٍI tried every gleaming sword of Indian steel
- جلا مذ تجلى أعينا فيك تدمعSince his transfiguration, eyes that weep for you have been brightened
- حاشا لهامة من أتى لخلاصناFar be it from the head of Him who came for our salvation
- حاشاك يا من عشت بكرا في الورىFar be it from you, O you who lived a virgin among humankind,
- حاشاكم من وصمة تزري بكمFar from you be any stain that disgraces you;
- حب الإله وحب العالم اختلفاLove of God and love of the world are at odds.
- حبيب لنا بين الرموز يناقشA beloved of ours is discussed among symbols,
- حتام يا راهبا سكران مشتغلاHow long, O drunken monk, will you remain engrossed
- حزت الرئاسة في الآفاق قاطبةYou attained primacy across all horizons,
- حقا لقد صعد المسيح موجهاTruly, Christ ascended, facing
- حلول حال أفرقنا مجالاA descent turned our most timid into a prowler,
- حليف بلوى شكا جورا فقلت لهOne bound to affliction complained of injustice, so I told him:
- حواسك يا بتولة مرتضيهYour senses, O Virgin, are content
- حي الديار ديار جلق واستزِدGreet the dwellings, the dwellings of Jilliq, and seek more
- خذ خمرة الكذب من هذي وسخريةTake the wine of falsehood from babble and mockery,
- خف أيها الإنسان ذو الإيمانFear, O human being of faith,
- خلعت هياكلها بجرعاء الحمىShe cast off her bodily frames on the sanctuary’s sandy ground,
- خليلي أما هذه فديارهمMy two friends, these indeed are their dwellings,
- خليلي مرا بي على ربع ناسكMy two friends, take me past an ascetic's dwelling,
- دع اليهود فلا ينفك خبثهمLeave the Jews be, for their malice never ceases
- دع راهبا لا يخدم الله ربهLeave a monk who does not serve God, his Lord,
- دعي يا نفسي لهوا فيك طالحForsake, O my soul, the corrupt amusement within you.
- دنت العناصر من علائكThe elements drew near to your loftiness
- دهاني من كلفت به صغيراHe whom I loved in youth has brought me grief.
- دهرنا قد تزندقاOur age has turned heretical;
- ذاك الذي يختفي في حضن جاريةThat one who hides in a maiden's embrace
- ذريني فجدي حيثما كنت مرشديLet me be; wherever I am, my fortune is my guide.
- ذلت لعزة دينك الأديانThe religions bowed to the might of Your religion,
- ذهب الناكث عناThe oath-breaker went away from us,
- رأيت العلم في الدنيا سعيداI saw knowledge happy in this world,
- رأيت الله حل بكل قلبI saw God dwell in every heart
- رأيت مريم ملجانا بضيقتِناI saw Mary as our refuge in our distress,
- رأيت منافقا يحمي خبيثاI saw a hypocrite protecting a wicked man,
- رأينا آدمينِ معا ولكنWe beheld two Adams together, yet
- رأينا من عهودِكمWe have seen among your pledges
- رب الورى في عرشهThe Lord of humankind is on His throne,
- رب عظيم عزيز في الأنام يجيA Lord, great and mighty, comes among humankind,
- ربي بنى كالوحيد القرن مسكنهLike the unicorn, my Lord built His dwelling,
- رعى الله بستانا تجلت رياضهMay God preserve a garden whose meadows shone forth
- رعى الله ديرا كنت فيه مسلماMay God watch over a monastery where I offered greetings
- رقت البتولة في معارف ربهاThe Virgin rose in knowledge of her Lord, the
- رويدا رويدا يا حداة الركائبِSlowly, slowly, O singing drivers of the camels!
- سألتك ربي أن تكمل غايتيI asked You, my Lord, to fulfill my purpose,
- سبيل الراهب الراجي بربThe path of the monk who places his hope in the Lord
- سر الإله بيوسف أن يكون لهGod was pleased to have Joseph as his
- سر عجيب فيه معنى أعجبA wondrous mystery, with a meaning more wondrous still.
- سر يا عذولي نائياYour secret, my distant beloved,
- سعدت نفوس بالإله الأعظمSouls found blessedness in God, the Most Great,
- سقياك سقياك ربعا ظل مبتهجاMay you be watered, may you be watered, O abode that remained joyful,
- سكنت قوافي الهم قلبا ساكناThe rhymes of sorrow settled in a still heart,
- سكنت وما سكنت لذاك عجزاI kept still, but did not do so out of helplessness.
- سل أنت ذاتك إن تود حقيقةAsk your own self if you desire a truth
- سلوا عني نغول بني الزناءAsk the bastard offspring of the sons of fornication about me,
- سمعت بأذني رنة السهمِ في قلبيI heard with my ear the arrow's ring in my heart.
- سموت الأنبيا يا بكر علماYou surpassed the prophets in knowledge, O Virgin,
- سموت يا بتولة في العذارىYou rose high, O Virgin, among the virgins,
- سهر صالح ينير العقولاWholesome wakefulness illuminates minds
- سهل عليك قبول طارق شهوةEasy for you is welcoming a desire that comes knocking;
- شدتي أعظم شدهMy affliction is the greatest affliction;
- شعار المدح من كرم الطبيعهThe emblem of praise springs from a generous nature,
- شكوت وقلبي من سهام كبائريI lamented, while my heart, from the arrows of my grave sins,
- شمس تسير مشارقا ومغارباA sun journeys through the lands of east and west,
- صار الإله بحبه متأنساGod, through His love, became incarnate
- صعدت إلى العلياء يا خير كاعبYou ascended to the heights, O finest maiden,
- طغى دهرنا بالشبه مذ ضل أهلهOur age ran rampant with doubts since its people went astray
- طهارة مريم العذراء كانتThe purity of Mary the Virgin was
- طهارة نفس لا تفيد وتنفعPurity of soul brings neither help nor benefit
- طوباك يا جسد العذراء إن لهBlessed are you, O body of the Virgin, for yours is
- طوبى لمن قد تاب بعد خطائهِBlessed is he who has repented after his sin,
- ظننت لحبكم حب وفيI thought your love was indeed a faithful love.
- عبادة مريم في الأرض كانتMary’s devotion on earth was
- عج بالحمى يا راكب الوجناءTurn aside to the sanctuary, O rider of the sturdy she-camel,
- عجبت لمولود وليس له أبI marveled at one born who has no father,
- عجيب أنك العذراء حبلىIt is wondrous that you, the Virgin, are with child,
- عد الدهر حتى انقض كوكبه الدريTime kept count until its radiant star fell,
- عذراء عبرية قد زانها شرفA Hebrew virgin was adorned with honor
- عفت نفسي أمانيهاMy soul has effaced its hopes.
- عقلي يحدثه لسان نائحA lamenting tongue speaks to my mind:
- علاك الفضل في طي الجمالExcellence rose above you in the folds of beauty,
- علوت جميع الخلق يا خير كاعبYou have surpassed all creation, O finest maiden,
- علوت قدرا فصرت أماYou rose in rank and became a mother
- عهدي برومية الكبرى وقد أخذتI remember great Rome, which had captured
- عيني تلت ما سطرته يمينيMy eye recited what my right hand had inscribed,
- عيني لتلك الناحيهMy eye is turned toward that region;
- فإن تدمن أخي أكلا وشرباSo if, my brother, you are addicted to eating and drinking,
- فإن خضع العقل الوضي لحواسناFor if the radiant intellect submits to our senses,
- فديتك قد أسكنت شخصا محيزاI would ransom you: you have indeed been lodged in a figure bounded in space,
- فقد تقسوا طباع ذوي اللآمهFor the natures of the base may harden
- فلا حزم إلا في طروق تجاربSo there is no prudence save through the coming of experience,
- قالت إليك فقلت طرفي أرمدShe said, “Away with you!” I said, “My eye is inflamed.”
- قالت لنا أم الإله وفضلهاThe Mother of God said to us, and her bounty
- قام الإله وكل ميت رابضGod has risen, while every dead person lies
- قد ارتفعتِ أيا أُم الإله ضحىYou have risen, O Mother of God, at midmorning,
- قد أومضت حكمة الإنجيل عن رسلThe Gospel's wisdom has flashed forth through apostles,
- قد حاز يوحنا الجنين كمالهJohn the Baptist gained perfection
- قد خصص الله مريم عند قدرتهGod, in His power, has singled Mary out
- قد ساد إبرهيم في إيمانهAbraham excelled in his faith,
- قد صارت اليشبع أرغن ربهاElizabeth has become her Lord's organ.
- قد ضل من قد حاد عن كشف الزللHe has gone astray who has turned away from exposing error,
- قد ضل من لم يرض في إيمانهHe has gone astray who, in his faith, accepts nothing
- قد مجد الله مريم أمه شرفاGod has glorified Mary, His mother
- قدك البعاد فهل إليك سبيلEnough of separation! Is there a way to you?
- قدما علوت على الزمان تجملاOnce I rose above time with dignity;
- قف بي خليلي واستمحStand beside me, my friend, and seek grace
- قف نبك نفسا عجبها بمماتهاStop; let us weep for a soul whose conceit spells its death.
- قفا نبك نفسا طال منها بسورهاHalt, you two: let us weep for a soul whose gloom has long endured,
- قفوا نرحم المجنون قسرا لمحنةStop; let us pity the man driven mad against his will by affliction,
- قل للحبيب الذي عزت محبتهTell the beloved whose love is precious
- قل ويك بيلاطوس الباغي بفعلتهSay: Woe to you, Pilate, whose deed is unjust!
- قلب يذوب إلى الأطلال والحللA heart that melts for the ruins and the meadows
- قلب يقلبه النوىA heart tossed about by separation,
- قلب يوسوس في الصدور ويخنسA heart that whispers in breasts and slinks away
- قلبي بمدحك يربأMy heart rises through praising you,
- قليبي من لويلات الفكيرMy little heart, from little nights of little thought,
- قم بنا يا أخا المودة صبحاRise with us at dawn, O brother of affection;
- كان السقوط من الصعودThe fall came from rising
- كأن ألفاظ نمام ينم بناIt is as though the words of a tale-bearer who gossips about us
- كأن دموع النفس في نحرها سلكAs if the tears of the soul were threaded in its throat
- كأنما صورة الدنيا بعالمهاIt is as though the image of the world, with its people,
- كف العتاب وكن علي شهيداCease reproach, and be a witness against me.
- كفاك يا راهبا إن كنت تتوانىSufficient for you, O monk, if you have been remiss
- كل شيء تراه عينك نقصاWhatever your eye sees as a flaw,
- كلفت نفسي جهادا فاستفدت بهI tasked myself with striving, and through it gained
- كللت بالمجد بكر قد غدتCrowned with glory was a virgin who had become
- كن محسنا تحسم ملامة لائمBe kind, put blame to rest
- لا تدينوا لن تدانواDo not judge; you will not be judged
- لا تشهدن شهادة منقولةDo not give secondhand testimony,

- لا عيب في الورد يذكو عرفه سحراThere is no fault in the rose, its fragrance growing strong before dawn,

- لأعجب شيء ما تجل عزائمهTruly, the most wondrous thing, whose resolves are lofty,
- لب الفضيلة إذ تدعوك نعمتهاAnswer virtue when her grace calls you,
- لجوا حصن البتول ولا تخافواCome to the Virgin's fortress, fear naught
- لقد ضل من قد حاد عن مورد الكشفHe who has strayed from the spring of revelation has gone astray,
- لقد نزل المولى العلي وهو رافلIndeed, the Most High Lord descended, arrayed
- لك الله من علم إلى الحق رافعGod bless you, O knowledge that lifts us toward truth.
- لله دهر سار بي متقلباGod's is an age that carried me along, ever changing;
- لله قلب تقلبه عواملهWhat a heart I have! Its governing forces toss it this way and that,
- لله يوم في الرياض قطعتهGod, what a wondrous day I spent in the gardens,
- لم يخلق الله القدير أبر منGod Almighty has created none more righteous than
- لما قبلت البشاره وارتضيت بهاWhen you accepted the Annunciation and were pleased with it,
- لنا الحجر المرموز في الكتب سرهOurs is the stone whose secret is encoded in the books;
- لو تفرز الخير من شر ومن شعثIf only you could distinguish good from evil and disorder,
- لو كان للأفلاك نطق أو فمIf the celestial spheres had speech or a mouth,
- ليس للرهبان عيدThere is no feast for monks;
- ما أحسن الروض في الروابيHow beautiful the garden on the hills,
- ما أحسن العقل يجلو فضل سيدهHow splendid is reason, revealing its master's excellence
- ما أزمتي اشتدت لوقر خطيتيWhenever my distress worsened under the burden of my sin,
- ما بال شمسِ ضحانا في منازلهاWhat ails our forenoon sun in its stations?
- ما بين جفني والأحبة برزخBetween my eyelid and the loved ones lies a barrier:
- ما كل من يهوى الصلاح موفقNot everyone who loves righteousness is granted success.
- ما لي أرى الأعمى يحيص عن الهدىWhy do I see the blind man turn away from guidance,
- ما لي بأوطان أخص صفاتهاWhat have I to do with lands whose most distinctive trait is
- محبة المال أشقى ما بليت بهLove of money is the most wretched affliction you have suffered,
- محبة فضة في الناس كانتLove of silver among people has been
- مدح البتول يسرنيPraise of the Virgin delights me.
- مذ حل روح الله قلبك ساكناSince the Spirit of God came to dwell in your heart,
- مراتب أهل الفضل خمس تجمعتThe ranks of the virtuous are five in all;
- مريم مدينة مولاها معظمةMary, her Lord’s city, is venerated
- مستودع البكر مريم حامل عجباThe womb of Mary the Virgin bears a wonder:
- مفتي الورى بزغت أدلة فضلهHer virtues shine, proofs plain for all to see
- مقام مريم في العياء منفردMary’s station in weariness stands alone,

- من لي بقلب أستميحهWho will give me a heart from which I may beg
- من مشرق العين أو من مغرب الدمعFrom the eye’s rising-place or the tears’ setting-place,
- من يكرم الآب يكرم إبنه وكذاWhoever honors the Father honors His Son, and likewise,
- مولى سيختار بكرا أن تكون لهA Lord will choose a virgin to be his
- ناديت مريم عند كل مصيبةI called upon Mary in every calamity.
- نار تثير على الضلوع وطيساA fire stokes a furnace upon my ribs,
- نجوت يا مريم العذراء من نفقYou escaped, O Mary the Virgin, from the tunnel of
- نرى الأبرار قد سادوا جميعاWe see that all the righteous have gained preeminence
- نزه فؤادك عن حب الجمال بهPurify your heart of the love of beauty within it.
- نصحتك نصحا قل من شأنه النصحI have offered you counsel; few make counsel their concern.
- نفس غدت قد عصاك أسهلهاA soul has come to defy you even in its easiest part;
- نفس لها مع كل ريح مذهبA soul with a course for every wind
- ها مريم مولودة بعجيبةBehold Mary, born through a miracle,
- ها هيكل اسرائيل أشرف منزلBehold Israel’s Temple, the noblest dwelling
- هاك سمعان وارم بالإنقباضTake him, Simeon, and cast off dejection.
- هبطت إليك من المحل الأرفعShe descended to you from the loftiest abode,
- هجر الزمان وليس لي من ساترTime forsook me, and I have no protector.
- هذا التواضع إن أردت مواهباHere is humility: if you desire gifts
- هذا دم الإبن عن نفسي أقدمهThis is the Son's blood; I offer it on behalf of my soul
- هذا سلام والصدور رحابThis is a greeting of peace, and hearts are open wide;
- هنيت بابن قد أتاك مباركاCongratulations on a son who has come to you blessed;
- هنئت يا بيت لحمCongratulations to you, O Bethlehem,
- هو الدهر إن تأمنه يخدعك صاحبهIt is Time: if you trust it, its companion deceives you.
- وأحباب لنا جاروا فجارواAnd loved ones of ours acted unjustly, and so overstepped
- وارحمتاه لميت في دينهOh, the pity for a dead man in debt,
- ورد الله الرحيمThe merciful God came,
- وسوف تأتيك بكر ذا معظمةAnd a virgin of great honor will come to you,
- وشاحك فخر في الأنام جليلYour sash is a noble glory among humankind,
- وقائلة والهم خيم ركبهAnd a woman said, while care's caravan had pitched camp
- وقائلة وذمة ملء فيهاAnd a woman said, with “By my honor!” filling her mouth:
- وقبيلة جهلاؤها عقلاؤهاAnd many a tribe has ignoramuses for wise men,
- ولقد ذكرتك يا وداعة عندماAnd indeed I remembered you, O gentleness, when
- ولي حظ من الدنيا شقيAnd my share of the world is wretched,
- وليلة إخالها بلا سحرAnd a night I thought would have no dawn,
- وما قصرت من حاضن ستر بيتهاAnd no chaste woman secluded behind her home's curtains
- يا إلهي النفوس قد غالهنهO my God, the souls have been struck down
- يا أم مولود أتى لخلاصناO mother of a child who came for our salvation,
- يا أيها الأب المكرم التقيO venerable, pious father,
- يا أيها الروح المعزي عزنيO Spirit, the Comforter, comfort me
- يا برج داود لا تنفك محدقةO Tower of David, never do the doves cease circling
- يا حسودا يزيده الخير شراO envious one, goodness increases his evil
- يا ذاكر الموت في قلب يحس بهO you who remember death in a heart that feels it,
- يا ذائبا من وجدهO you melting with longing,
- يا راهبا قد زاد فينا حكمةO monk, who has grown in wisdom among us,
- يا راهبا يبغي السلوك على وجلO monk who seeks the spiritual path in fear,
- يا روح سيدة الخلائق كلهمO spirit of the Lady of all creatures
- يا صاح إسمع مذ سمتO friend, listen, since there has risen
- يا صاح ما هذي الرباO friend, what are these hills?
- يا صاح هل أبصرت عيناك من أحدO friend, have your eyes seen anyone
- يا عين سحي بالدموع رذاذاO eye, pour forth tears in a spray,
- يا غافلا عن نفسهO you who are heedless of yourself,
- يا غافلا والإثم حل بأرضهO heedless one, in whose land sin has settled,
- يا فضل للفضل معنى أنت شارحهO Fadl, excellence has a meaning that you expound.
- يا قلب طِر من وكنة الأحشاءO heart, fly from the nest of the entrails
- يا قلب مريم بابن الله منطبعاO heart of Mary, imprinted with the Son of God,
- يا لحى الله علة التنكيدAh, may God curse the cause of distress!
- يا لها فرحة بها العقل يسموWhat a joy, through which the mind soars!
- يا ليتكمOh, if only you
- يا مريم البكر منك الغوث أطلبهO Mary, Virgin, I seek help from you,
- يا مسكن الله العلي وعرشهO dweller of God's sublime abode
- يا من تجلى عليناO you who appeared to us
- يا من حملت إله العاملين ومنO you who bore the God of those who labor, and you
- يا من رضيت الذل عني عارياO you who, naked, accepted humiliation on my behalf,
- يا من سموت إلى العلياء صاعدةO you who rose, ascending to the heights,
- يا من لها في الإحتشام منازلO you whose dwellings are in modesty,
- يا نسيما نراه يروي الغليلاO breeze we see quenching burning thirst,
- يا هاجري لا تغلطنO you who shun me, make no mistake:
- يا هاجي الورد قد أسرفت مفترياO reviler of the rose, you have gone too far in slander,
- يا هيكل القدس روح القدس حل بهO temple of holiness, where the Holy Spirit dwelt,
- يا هيكلا قد زانه بين الورىO temple, adorned among humankind
- يأتي أخيرا بإجلال وتكرمةHe comes at last amid reverence and honor,
- يحوز كل من الأبرار أجمعهمEach of the righteous, without exception, attains
- يسر العالم العلويThe heavenly world rejoices,
- يسوع أقبل من عرش السماء فقدJesus came from heaven's throne, for indeed
- يضيء في الشرق نجم كله عجبA star shines in the East, wholly wondrous.
- يهون علينا مس نارٍ ذكيةThe touch of a blazing fire is easy for us,
- يوم انتقال البتول لا شبيه لهThe day of the Virgin’s Assumption has no equal
