You surpassed the prophets in knowledge, O Virgin,

For their symbols were unveiled in the one you bore.

وفقت الرسل والأبرار طرّاً

وفقت الرسل والأبرار طرّاً

بغيرتك التي فيها ولدتِ

بغيرتك التي فيها ولدتِ

And you surpassed the apostles and all the righteous,

Through the zeal with which you were born.

علوت مواكب الشهداء لما

علوت مواكب الشهداء لما

رأيت عذاب إبنك واحتملتِ

رأيت عذاب إبنك واحتملتِ

You rose above the processions of martyrs when

You saw your son's torment and endured.

وفقت مناسك النساك طرّاً

وفقت مناسك النساك طرّاً

سهرت ثم صليت وصمتِ

سهرت ثم صليت وصمتِ

And you surpassed all the ascetics' devotions:

You kept vigil, then prayed and fasted.

وقد نافست في الطهر العذارى

وقد نافست في الطهر العذارى

فمن فاق الكمال أجبت أنتِ

فمن فاق الكمال أجبت أنتِ

And you vied with the virgins in purity.

'Who, then, surpassed perfection?' I answered: 'You.'

فهل من بالغٍ في حب ربي

فهل من بالغٍ في حب ربي

مقامك يا بتول وقد علوتِ

مقامك يا بتول وقد علوتِ

Can anyone, then, attain, in love for my Lord,

Your station, O Virgin, now that you have risen so high?

لهذا كنت في العهدين حدّاً

لهذا كنت في العهدين حدّاً

به وقف الكمال بمن حملتِ

به وقف الكمال بمن حملتِ

Thus, in both Testaments, you were the limit

At which perfection came to rest, through him whom you carried.
