دعي يا نفسي لهواً فيك طالحْ

ولا تطغي فإن اللَهَ صالحْ

ولا تطغي فإن اللَهَ صالحْ

Forsake, O my soul, the corrupt amusement within you.

My soul, leave your vain desires,

And do not transgress, for God is good.

Do not transgress, for God is the Bestower of success.

وإسعي سعي من بالخير راغبْ

وإسعي سعي من بالخير راغبْ

وأجري الدمع عن عينيك غاربْ

وأجري الدمع عن عينيك غاربْ

And strive as one who longs for goodness.

Strive with the effort of one who hopes for good,

And send tears streaming from your eyes.

Let the tears flow down from your eyes.

فإن تسعي ظفرت بأجر راهب

فإن تسعي ظفرت بأجر راهب

غدا عن عالم الشهوات هارب

غدا عن عالم الشهوات هارب

For if you strive, you will win the reward of a monk

If you strive you will gain the reward of an ascetic,

Who has become a fugitive from the world of desires,

Tomorrow fleeing from the world of passions.

ويطوي الليل سهراناً ونائحْ

ويطوي الليل سهراناً ونائحْ

على آثامه وبهن بائحْ

على آثامه وبهن بائحْ

And passes the night wakeful and lamenting

The night passes in wakefulness and lamentation

Over his sins, and openly confessing them.

Over its sins - it is remorseful and regretful.

رأيت العالم الغرّار فينا

رأيت العالم الغرّار فينا

عدوّا قد حوى داءً دفينا

عدوّا قد حوى داءً دفينا

I saw the deceitful world in our midst,

I saw this fleeting world as an enemy to us,

An enemy harboring a hidden disease.

Bearing hidden malice.

يعدْنا بالسرور ولا يفينا

يعدْنا بالسرور ولا يفينا

ولما أن رآنا قد شفينا

ولما أن رآنا قد شفينا

It promises us joy, but does not keep faith with us;

It promises us joy but does not fulfill us,

And when it saw that we had been healed,

And when it saw we were cured,

يجردُ شره وبه يكافح

يجردُ شره وبه يكافح

فيردي بالهلاك لمن يصافح

فيردي بالهلاك لمن يصافح

It unsheathes its evil and does battle with it,

It bared its evil and attacked us with it,

And brings ruin upon whomever it shakes hands with.

Casting into perdition those who befriend it.

غدا متهدداً فعدا وهددْ

غدا متهدداً فعدا وهددْ

وشد بظلمه القاسي وشددْ

وشد بظلمه القاسي وشددْ

It grew menacing, then attacked and threatened,

Tomorrow it threatens us, so flee from it,

And pressed hard with its cruel oppression, then harder still.

Strengthen its harsh injustice and severity.

ورد سروره منا وردد

ورد سروره منا وردد

عزائم خير أنفسنا وبدد

عزائم خير أنفسنا وبدد

And withheld its joy from us, and thwarted

It has repulsed our joy and driven it away,

Our souls' good resolves, and scattered

Scattered the resolves for good in our souls and destroyed them.

ذخائر خيرنا والعمر رائح

ذخائر خيرنا والعمر رائح

وهدَّ بِشرِّه مَلِكاً وسائح

وهدَّ بِشرِّه مَلِكاً وسائح

Our treasures of goodness, while life slips away.

It has squandered the treasures of our goodness while life is fleeting,

And with its evil it crushed king and wandering ascetic alike.

And destroyed kings and wanderers with its evil.

فأين ملوك أهل الأرض طرّا

فأين ملوك أهل الأرض طرّا

وأين الجاعلون الخير شرّا

وأين الجاعلون الخير شرّا

Where, then, are all the kings of the peoples of the earth?

Where are the kings of earth yesterday,

And where are those who turned good into evil?

And where are those who made good into evil?

وأين الحالبون أسىً وضرّا

وأين الحالبون أسىً وضرّا

وأين مجرِّعون الناس مُرّا

وأين مجرِّعون الناس مُرّا

And where are those who milked out sorrow and harm?

Where are those who milked sorrow and harm,

And where are those who made people swallow bitterness?

And where are those who embittered people?

غدوا تحت الثرى والحال واضح

غدوا تحت الثرى والحال واضح

وحرُّ جهم النيران فاضح

وحرُّ جهم النيران فاضح

They now lie beneath the soil, and their state is plain;

They lie under the earth, and the matter is clear,

And the heat of the grim flames lays bare their shame.

The heat of Hellfire burns and exposes them.

فكأس الموت طاف بهم وحيّا

فكأس الموت طاف بهم وحيّا

فما أبقى بهم في الحي حيا

فما أبقى بهم في الحي حيا

For death's cup went round among them and greeted them;

The cup of death came around to them and greeted them,

So it left not one of them alive in the settlement,

Leaving no life for them here.

وأخلى منهم ربعاً وحيا

وأخلى منهم ربعاً وحيا

وكان السمُّ في تلك الحميا

وكان السمُّ في تلك الحميا

And emptied dwelling and settlement of them.

It emptied the places and the lives,

And poison was in that heady wine,

And the poison in that oblivion corrupted souls and limbs.

فأفسد بالنفوس وبالجوارح

فأفسد بالنفوس وبالجوارح

وقد نشبت بهم أيدٍ جوارح

وقد نشبت بهم أيدٍ جوارح

Thus it corrupted souls and limbs,

Destructive hands were embedded in them.

And wounding hands had fastened upon them.

My God, protect us from those sins

إلهي وقِّنا تلك الرزايا

إلهي وقِّنا تلك الرزايا

وأسعدنا على تلك البلايا

وأسعدنا على تلك البلايا

My God, protect us from those calamities,

And make us fortunate over those tribulations,

And aid us in facing those afflictions,

That we may attain the wishes in our deaths,

لنحظى بالمنى عند المنايا

لنحظى بالمنى عند المنايا

لأنك خير من يهب العطايا

لأنك خير من يهب العطايا

So that we may attain our hopes when death comes,

For You are the best granter of gifts.

For you are the best of those who bestow gifts.

For the sanctity of Mary, forgive and pardon,

بحرمة مريمٍ فاغفر وسامح

بحرمة مريمٍ فاغفر وسامح

وغُضَّ الطرف عنا يا مسامح

وغُضَّ الطرف عنا يا مسامح

By Mary's sanctity, forgive and pardon,

And turn away from us, O Most Forgiving.

And avert your gaze from us, O Pardoner.
