    I heard with my ear the arrow's ring in my heart.

    And with my eye I watched pleasure's lightning flash in my conceit.

    And with my palm I touched every way out that came

    To bring me near one sin and take me far from another.

    فها أنا من تلك اللذاذة في حرب

    And with my mouth I tasted a pleasure that awakens desire;

    So here I am, at war because of that delight.

    With my nose I smelled the scent of wine and repose,

    With which I trace the tracks of every kind of falsehood.

    Yet by persisting I only grew more willfully ignorant,

    As though I were in the east, leaning toward the west.

    These are but senses plying a trade,

    Wavering between loss and gain.

    So through them I hoped for life, like one digging

    Toward his own death with his hoof, the instrument of ruin.

    None cunningly cuts off my nose with my own hand

    But me; and none wrongs me but my heart.

    ولولا فمي ما لذَّ أكلي ولا شربي

    But for my hand, I would never have spent a day defiled;

    But for my mouth, neither my eating nor my drinking would have tasted sweet.

    Nor would my tongue of invective have raced

    In its arena with slander, blame, and disparagement.

    O breezes I spent the night breathing in,

    Through them I learned my malady; that is enough for me, enough.

    The five senses shot at me with arrows of their own,

    Twofold in aim and threefold in feathering,

    Fourfold in nature, fivefold in desire,

    Sixfold in space, sevenfold in warfare.

    وناهيك من رامٍ يرى باطنَ اللبِّ

    They shot at me through their briber, secretly and openly;

    And what an archer, who sees the mind's inmost core!

    تشوقُ إلى شرقٍ وتَرغبُ عن غرب

    By their nature they appear and elude reason;

    They stir longing for the east and turn away from the west.

    Beneath them flow waters of bitterness,

    Through seven springs, mixing the bitter with the sweet.

    وإن جزتَ ذا حَزمٍ بأطلالها لَبِّ

    So guard their gates with reason's eye, and you will triumph;

    And if you pass their ruins with resolve, answer the call.

    By God, if you come to the dwellings and do not find

    My companions in their courtyard because of some calamity, call out to me.

    فكم هائمٍ أصباه منها الذي يَسبي

    Do not wander lovestruck among Mayya's ruins;

    How many a wanderer has been made lovesick by what captivates in her!

    So leave Mayy's Ghaylan dead, slain by Mayya,

    By the two arrows of her glances; go with me to my flock.

    And lament over me if you see me looking back,

    And my sobbing in love has lingered long over her ruins.

    وعُج بي ولا تَعجبْ إذا زاد بي عُجْبي

    Beware of dwelling in a house of blame;

    Turn aside with me, and do not marvel if my conceit grows within me.

    Beware the aspiring gaze, whose kinship is

    With the king of serpents in the sharpness of its sting.

    For in warfare you will see no war like its war,

    When today you retire into the heart's solitude.

    So cross a valley: no son of a star has walked there

    With resolve without rising above the clay of dust.

    They have veils; by veiling them your piety gains strength

    To veil them; and veiling lies within those very veils.

    When I saw prudence signaling with its eye

    To me, and it set me on the road's clear course,

    I lingered, standing at humility's gate,

    At her gates, between distance and nearness.

    And I kept knocking at Mary's gates

    With the hands of hope, until through her I meet my Lord,

    My heart, my mind, and my thought listening intently to her,

    Vigilant, until I attained what is solid.

    هي الكوكب الدري في السبعة الشهب

    She is the sun in influence and the full moon in radiance;

    She is the pearl-bright star among the seven blazing stars.

    She is the stone signified by symbols in our alchemy,

    Which the people's sage saw in ages long past.

    And he wrought it to perfection through dissolution and coagulation,

    Thus by dissolution from spirit, and by coagulation from dust.

    And he brought it forth as a noble body, purified

    Of original stain, imperfection, and reproach.

    She is the white pearl; her mystery is within the Throne.

    When that Throne trembles, she says to it, 'Enough for me.'

    I am Mary, mother of intercession and piety,

    And mother of perfect hope, triumph, and love.

    فأين الملا العلوي من ذلك القرب

    My rank and station rise above all peers;

    Where is the heavenly host compared with that nearness?

    If I am the mother of God, then all that

    Is seen in universal existence is beneath me, save my Lord.
