للَهto God (an exclamation of wonder) يومٌa day فيin الرياضِthe gardens قطعتُهI spent it
بحمىin the precincts of قويقٍQuwayq مثلَهits like لنwill not أبصراI see
God, what a wondrous day I spent in the gardens,
God has a day in the meadows I spent
In Quwayq's precincts—I shall never see its like.
With feverish passion, the likes of which I'll never see again
والزَهرand the flowers فيin تلكthose الرياضthe gardens كأنهas though it were

And the flowers in those gardens seemed like
The flowers in that meadow are like
Bright stars upon a green carpet.
Stars blossoming on a green carpet
والريحand the wind فيin فننthe bough of الأراكthe arak tree مُشَبِّبٌa flute player
لماwhen رأىit saw الغصنَthe bough المجردَbare مُزهِراblossoming
And the wind in the arak bough was a flute player,
The wind in the boughs of the trees makes
When it saw the bare bough blossoming.
The bare branch blossom when it sees it
والغصنand the bough يرقصdances تحتbeneath أذيالthe trailing skirts of الصَباthe east wind
فيكادso it nearly منfrom طربٍrapture بهwithin it أنto يكسراbe broken
And the bough danced beneath the east wind's trailing skirts,
The branch dances under the train of the morning breeze
So it almost broke from the rapture within it.
Almost breaking from sheer joy
والورقand the doves فيin أعلىthe tops of الغصونthe branches كأنهاas though they were

And the doves atop the branches seemed like
The leaves at the tops of the branches are like
Non-elidable hamza marks that had risen above the lines of script.
Verses rising above the lines
والسحبand the clouds تبكيweep والبروقand the lightning flashes ضواحكٌlaughing
كالعسكرlike the army المنصورvictorious يطردُit drives away عسكراan army
And the clouds wept while the lightning flashes laughed,
The clouds cry and the lightning laughs
Like a victorious army driving another army away.
Like a victorious army driving out another army
والماءand the water فيin تلكthose الشعابthe ravines كأنهas though it were

And the water in those ravines seemed like
The water in those valleys is like
A skittish serpent that had been frightened and fled.
A frightened doe flock bolting away

حتىuntil هوىit plunged منfrom شاهقٍa lofty height فتكسراand then it shattered
It kept bolting, flowing from its farthest reach,
It kept on raging out of its depths
Until it plunged from a lofty height and shattered.
Until it fell from a great height and shattered
