What have I to do with lands whose most distinctive trait is

That their noble and their base stand as equals?

It is their custom to deride their guest's praise,

Unjustly, as their baseborn man reviles the wellborn.

I have sworn that I shall not dwell upon their soil,

Ever—even if Moses were their interlocutor.

I love other lands, turning away from these, even if

Their water and breeze have grown gentle.

And I shall surely abandon their dwellings, for they are

A land whose confines are too narrow for the noble.

Leave them and pay them no heed—oh, how often

The base have gained honor there, and their noble been brought low!
