قفواStop, all of you نَرحمِlet us pity المجنونَthe madman قسراًagainst his will لمحنةٍbecause of an affliction
قفوا نَرحمِ المجنونَ قسراً لمحنةٍ
ونقسوand let us be harsh علىwith المجنونthe madman أذهلهdazed him السكرُdrunkenness
ونقسو على المجنون أذهله السكرُ
Stop; let us pity the man driven mad against his will by affliction,
and be harsh with the madman whom drunkenness has dazed.
إذاif كانis عقلthe mind المرءof a person يُغويهleads it astray فكرُهhis thinking
إذا كان عقل المرء يُغويه فكرُه
فماthen what حالthe state عقلٍof a mind غرهdeceived it الفكرthought والخمرُand wine
فما حال عقلٍ غره الفكر والخمرُ
If a man's mind is led astray by his thinking,
what, then, is the state of a mind deceived by thought and wine?
