I see that our body needs sustenance to keep it alive,

in a measure that shields it from the harm of weakness and surfeit.

And the most beneficial fast is one measured for a day,

provided its fullest observance amounts to eating little.

So beware of surfeit and gluttony,

lest fornication take you unawares amid lust.

Hold steadfastly to the cord of contentment,

for many a pain has come, proclaiming an overfilled belly.

    وأحسنُ منه دَحضُ طعمٍ ولذة

    Leave the body needing bare sustenance, out of self-restraint;

and better than that is rejecting flavor and pleasure.

For the soul's purification from the murk of blindness

comes through abstinence, fasting, and health.
