O you who, naked, accepted humiliation on my behalf,

my Lord, when you came in human form.

And indeed you were born holy in a place

that had become defiled with the dung of ewes.

Why should I not share with you, standing

in humiliation, afflicted, pondering your deed,

    contemplating with spiritual insight

your mother's sorrows when she saw you in this distress?

She had wrapped you in poor swaddling cloths,

though your mighty command could enfold the universe,

your head pillowed on the dung and straw that

even the lowliest of beasts would not accept as a seat.

You weep as a child weeps, while he lacks

a covering in that cold besetting you.

O heart of Mary, how pained you were

when she saw the richest of all creation penniless!
