كلفت نفسي جهاداً فاستفدت به
عزماًresolve مكيناًsteadfast كسِقطِlike a spark of الزندthe fire-stick بالقَدْحِby striking
عزماً مكيناً كسِقطِ الزند بالقَدْحِ
I tasked myself with striving, and through it gained
I tasked myself with intense effort, through which
A steadfast resolve, like a spark from a fire-stick when struck.
I gained resolute determination, like sparks from flint.
قدindeed دقgrew keen عقليmy mind بهthrough it حقّاًtruly فأرقنيso it kept me sleepless
قد دق عقلي به حقّاً فأرقني
حتىuntil رأيتI saw غموضthe obscurity of المتنthe main text فيin الشرحthe commentary
حتى رأيت غموض المتن في الشرح
My mind truly grew keen through it and kept me sleepless,
It has certainly sharpened my mind, though it deprived me of sleep
Until I saw the main text's obscurity in the commentary.
Until I saw the ambiguity of the text in explanation.
فانهلso poured forth دمعيmy tears انهلالthe pouring of المزنthe rain clouds منسجماًflowing freely
فانهل دمعي انهلال المزن منسجماً
فذاكfor that نارٌfire وهذاand this فائضoverflowing الرشحmoisture
فذاك نارٌ وهذا فائض الرشح
So my tears streamed freely, pouring as rain clouds pour;
So my tears flowed like heavy rain, harmoniously
For that is fire, and this is overflowing moisture.
For that is fire, and this is an outpouring of rain.
وعادتand became النفسthe soul بالأفكارthrough thoughts هاديةًguiding
وعادت النفس بالأفكار هاديةً
كالسفنlike ships مطروحةًcast adrift فيin بحرهاits sea الملحsalty
كالسفن مطروحةً في بحرها الملح
And through thoughts the soul became a guide,
And my soul returned with calm thoughts
Like ships cast adrift in its salty sea.
Like ships lying in their salty sea.
وأصبحand became العقلthe mind حرّاًfree طاهراًpure يقظاًwakeful
وأصبح العقل حرّاً طاهراً يقظاً
ماnot زالceased يحمدpraises ربthe Lord of الحمدpraise والمدحand laudation
ما زال يحمد رب الحمد والمدح
And the mind became free, pure, and wakeful,
My mind became free, pure, and awake
Never ceasing to praise the Lord of praise and laudation,
It continues to praise the Lord of praise and glory,
حتىuntil رأىit saw عالمthe realm of اللاهوتdivinity منبجساًwelling forth
حتى رأى عالم اللاهوت منبجساً
مثلlike انبجاسthe welling up of الضياlight فيin موردthe wellspring of الصبحdawn
مثل انبجاس الضيا في مورد الصبح
Until it saw the realm of divinity welling forth,
Until it saw the metaphysical world gushing forth
Like light welling up at the wellspring of dawn.
Like the radiance of light at dawn’s wellspring.
