My heart rises through praising you,
My heart heals with praise of you
in pride, and my wound heals.
Proudly, and my wound heals too

how long, in sorrow's night,
Lost in the night of sorrow
must I remain bewildered by what befalls me?
Perplexed by what comes to pass

Why do I err, why do you forgive?
and why do you bend toward me,
Only because I break my vow, and you pardon

My pillar in hardship,

my fire is quenched by your light.

My reproacher fears, concerning you,
I stand, your humble servant
my reproach, and retreats from me abashed.
At your door, gently knocking
إِنّيindeed I ببابكat your door قائمٌstanding

How can my longing and passion
and judgment concerns whoever begins.
Be calmed, of love for you burnt?

How can my separation, my crying

Without you, ever be comforted?

Far be it from you to turn away
Take, oh Jesus, my passion
from one who never rests in loving you.
In it, will you find comfort?

Take, O Jesus, my life's last spark;
O sea of boundless grace
will you dwell within it?
The universe fills from your plenty

O sea of overflowing grace,
To you I come, seeking drink
from which the universe is filled,
From your spring that never runs dry
قدindeed جِئتهُI have come to it مُستسقياًseeking water

وَعناكمُand toil for you لاnot يَدنَأُbecomes base

I have come to it seeking water,
The face of the noble is honor
and toil for you is never base.
Its hallmark does not tarnish
وجهُface الكريمthe generous one كَرامةٌhonor

The generous one's face is honor,
The eye of the foe frightens me
whose sign never grows damp.
But by you it is rendered blind
عَينُeye العدُوِّthe enemy تُخيفنيfrightens me
لكنَّهاbut it بكَthrough you تُفقأُis gouged out

The enemy's eye frightens me,
The envious I mark
but through you it is gouged out.
By the scowl on his face
ليfor me فيin الحسودthe envious man علامةٌa sign
فيon وجههِhis face إذwhen يَحمأُdarkens

For me, the envious man bears a sign
He thinks he can sow dissent
on his face when it darkens:
Between me and you, the fool!
خُبثٌmalice يَظُنُّhe thinks بأَنَّهُthat it

malice—he imagines it
As if we heed his word
sows discord between me and you.
When he is nothing to us

Far be it that we should fear him, if
How can I fear him when Mary
we pay him no heed.
Is the safe harbor and refuge?
كيفَhow اَختَشيهِI fear him ومَريمٌwhile Mary

How can I fear him, when Mary
O you who fear his mockery
is a haven of safety and a harbor?
Come to her, you'll not be shamed
ياO خائفاًone fearing منof رُزئِهِhis harm
إِنif جِئتَهاyou come to her لاnot تُرزأُyou are afflicted

O you who fear the harm he brings,
My ardent heart never rests
if you come to her, you will suffer no loss.

The sorrowful heart never ceases
Though the foe taunts me daily
to hope—never ceases,

But your blows I welcome

Through love for her I have polished
You are in the world
a heart that rusts without you.

The enemy repels with his might,
but your might repels more strongly.
How often have I found comfort

Among humankind, you are nothing but
When abandoned, in you I trusted
a helper; one such as you gives help.

How many a destitute man have I restored,
Fending off harms, my food
whom I thought could not be restored!

Where the wicked kept invading
keeping watch amid calamities.
