يشكو الورى يوماً ويوماً يشكرُ
In Damascus I saw the talebearer bewildered;
In Damascus I saw the stars perplexed,
One day he complains of people, and another day he gives thanks.
Complaining of fate one day, thankful the next.

لكنها فيكم تُذَمُّ وتُهجَرُ
By God, Damascus is still lovely,
By God, Damascus is still beautiful,
but because of you she is reviled and shunned.
But in you she is disdained and abandoned.
