واليوم حطتني ركائب همتي
Once I rose above time with dignity;
My feet once trampled time in their prime
And today the mounts of my ambition have brought me low,
Yet today my ambitions have made me their slave
لمّاwhen فقدتI lost بهاin it الكريمthe noble man سجيةًin character
لمّا فقدت بها الكريم سجيةً
منwho كانwas عنfrom حدthe limit of الكمالperfection برتبةby one rank
من كان عن حد الكمال برتبة
When in it I lost the man of noble character,
Since that noble man of perfect grace
Who stood one rank from the limit of perfection.
Slipped through my hands and escaped this place
ذوpossessed of فطنةٍdiscernment وبراعةٍand brilliance متعرضٌaspiring
ذو فطنةٍ وبراعةٍ متعرضٌ
لبلاغةٍto eloquence قدindeed حلsettled أضيقnarrowest حفرةpit
لبلاغةٍ قد حل أضيق حفرة
A man of discernment and brilliance, aspiring
He of wisdom, skill and eloquence
To eloquence, has settled in the narrowest pit.
Now lies trapped in suffering's darkest trench
