Say: Woe to you, Pilate, whose deed is unjust!

May you be repaid with evil—with poverty and destitution!

How dared you act against him who came to redeem

Our souls, greeting him with brutality?

You decreed that they should correct his fault with blows,

Yet you deserve scourging more than he, O scoffer.

This is he whose might the celestial spheres dread,

And whose lofty sanctuary they extol with reverence.

Today you displayed him naked and weak,

Of his own will, to rescue Eve from the scoffer's hand.
