لاnot بالأصولthrough ancestral roots تخالُهاyou imagine them أحياءَalive
Through reason a young man may gain new life,
With reason a youth may contain revival
Not through ancestral roots you imagine alive.
Not with fundamentals that make them seem alive

The crown of learning is wisdom, through which rises
The pinnacle of knowledge is wisdom through which one is exalted
Its ladder above mere clamor.
Above its froth that makes it noise

Thus understanding yields penetrating insight,
So the results of perceptions are penetrating insight
And thought is aflame, revealing ideas.
And thought is ignited displaying viewpoints

Be gentle in speech to an obstinate fool,
For if in speech to a stubborn fool
Quarrelsome—and be a stammerer in debate with him.
Obstinate, yet engage him in debate and yield

And lower your wing in your pursuit of an aim;
And fold your wing humbly seeking
For the proud man misses what he desired.
The stubborn will miss what he desires

For noble virtues are the young man's hallmark,
So the virtues of character are the mark of a youth
And through them he wins affection and brotherhood.
And through them he attains affection and brotherhood

Deliberation in pursuing aims is indeed wisdom,
Patience in purposes is wisdom
And its opposite has ruined things.
And its opposite has ruined things

And silence's mantle is held in awe for its majesty,
The garment of chastity hides what is underneath
And the wisdom of speech guards against indecency.

The robe of chastity turns attention from what lies beneath it,
To merit is attributed every honorable tear
And humility exalts the weak.

To virtue is credited every adept in noble leadership;
And forbearance, hearts serve it obediently
And the spread of justice folds enemies away.

And hearts serve forbearance, readily responding:
The passing of days goes by as though
How many a white hand of kindness you have shown us!
The passing clouds inform us of news

And the days come round and pass, like
Maladies originate from their movements
The passing of clouds, bringing us tidings.

Afflictions spring from their movements,
Life is corrupted suddenly by disasters
And become at times a malady, at times a cure.

And hardships suddenly spoil life,
Whoever rejects blessings is deprived of them, and whoever
By their arrival, and add further ills to it.

Whoever is ungrateful for a blessing is denied it; and whoever
Stinginess is laden with sorrow and harshness
Taunts others with it turns a right deed into wrong.

And avarice is laden with grief and cruelty,
O you the protector, exemplar of his people
And generosity holds joy and prayer.

O learned master, exemplar of your people,
For ignorance is grasped by the wise since he
Do not tire of protecting the soul.

قدindeed كانwas قدماًformerly جاهلاًignorant خطّاءoften erring
For the wise man understands ignorance, because
Sincerity is the best virtue there can be
He was once ignorant and prone to error.

And truthfulness is the finest virtue there can be,
Be like the otter in keeping a promise when
And falsehood is the foulest cloak there can be.
Survival on promises is faithfulness

Be like al-Samaw'al in keeping a pledge, for
Whoever experiences the world and traverses its ruggedness
Remaining true to pledges is fidelity.
Knows its richness and avoids wretchedness
منwhoever يخبرtests through experience الدنياthe world ويسبُرْand probes بخسَهاits injustice

Whoever tests the world and fathoms its injustice
And knowledge is unknown to the fool since he
Knows his own sufficiency and guards against calamities.

And the dullard is ignorant of learning, because
A person is both mistaken and correct
He has never known learning or learned men.

إنif كانis دعواهhis claim لهfor him إغواءa cause of straying

A man between the two is right and wrong,
Like the strong poet who is guided at times
If his claim leads him astray.
And at times rides misguidance

Like a poet with inconsistent rhyme-vowels, at times rightly guided
This is what leaves the avaricious successful
In his verse, and at times lapsing into rhyme-vowel discord.

This is what leaves the diligent man successful;

Blessed is a guide who reconciles enemies.

One day—she protected him, and he gladdened her when he came.
