حبُّlove الإلهGod وحبُّand love العالمthe world اختلفاthe two are at odds
حبُّ الإله وحبُّ العالم اختلفا
منwhoever رامseeks جمعَهماto unite them both قدhas ضلgone astray وانحرفاand deviated
من رام جمعَهما قد ضل وانحرفا
Love of God and love of the world are at odds.
Love of God and love of the world are opposed
Whoever seeks to unite them has gone astray and veered off course.
Whoever tries to combine them has gone astray
واعلمand know بأنكthat you إنif أحببتyou love جسمكyour body قدhave
واعلم بأنك إن أحببت جسمك قد
أبغضتyou hated مولاكyour Lord فاعكسso reverse this تكُyou will be مُتَّصفاpossessing that quality
أبغضت مولاك فاعكس تكُ مُتَّصفا
And know that if you love your body, you have
Know that if you loved your body
hated your Lord; reverse this, and be marked by that quality.
You have hated your Master, so reverse your traits
منwhoever يحببِloves اللَهGod يبغضْhates كلevery مكرمةٍhonor
من يحببِ اللَه يبغضْ كل مكرمةٍ
سواهother than Him والنفسَand the self والجثمانَand the body والشرفاand prestige
سواه والنفسَ والجثمانَ والشرفا
Whoever loves God hates every honor
Whoever loves God hates all prestige
other than Him, and the self, the body, and prestige.
Other than Him, and the self, and the body, and honor
يسعىhe strives بإنجازby fulfilling أمرthe command of اللَهGod محترِماًhonoring
يسعى بإنجاز أمر اللَه محترِماً
مولىًa Lord دعاهcalled him فلباهso he answered Him وماand did not وقفاstop
مولىً دعاه فلباه وما وقفا
He strives to fulfill God's command, honoring
He strives to fulfill God's command with reverence
the Lord who called him; he answered Him and did not stop.
Responding to the Master who called him, not hesitating
لاdo not تُلقِlend سمعَكyour ear للشيطانto Satan إنindeed لهhe has
لا تُلقِ سمعَك للشيطان إن له
مكراًa scheme دفيناًhidden يعيدturns السعيstriving منحرفاastray
مكراً دفيناً يعيد السعي منحرفا
Do not lend your ear to Satan, for he has
Do not lend your ear to the accursed Satan
a hidden scheme that turns striving astray.
He has hidden cunning that leads one astray
سرwalk سيرَin the manner of عبدٍa servant أمينٍfaithful شاخصٍgazing أبداًalways
سر سيرَ عبدٍ أمينٍ شاخصٍ أبداً
نحوtoward الصليبthe Cross وكنand be بالصبرin patience ملتحفاcloaked
نحو الصليب وكن بالصبر ملتحفا
Walk as a faithful servant, ever gazing
The secret of the journey of a devout and steadfast servant
toward the Cross, and be cloaked in patience.
Is always towards the Cross, so be clothed in patience
تبّاًwoe لمنto whoever قدhas نجاescaped منfrom لجِّthe deep waters of عالمهhis world
تبّاً لمن قد نجا من لجِّ عالمه
واغتالهand slew him unawares غرقُdrowning الميناthe harbor فواso, oh أسفاsorrow!
واغتاله غرقُ المينا فوا أسفا
Woe to him who has escaped his world's deep waters,
Woe to him who was saved from the whirlpool of his world
yet was struck down by drowning in the harbor—alas!
Only to drown in the harbor, what a pity!
ازهدbe detached بدنياكfrom your world واحسمand sever كلَّevery عاطفةٍattachment
ازهد بدنياك واحسم كلَّ عاطفةٍ
وخفِّضand curb الكبرpride واتبعand follow سيداًa master شرُفاnoble
وخفِّض الكبر واتبع سيداً شرُفا
Renounce your world, and sever every attachment.
Renounce your worldly life and sever all attachments
And curb pride, and follow a noble master.
Lower your pride and follow the noble Master
احذرbeware مكامنthe lurking places of إبليسIblis اللعينthe accursed وخذand take
احذر مكامن إبليس اللعين وخذ
مديحpraise of مريمMary ستراًa protective covering يمنعwards off الصلَفاconceit
مديح مريم ستراً يمنع الصلَفا
Beware the lurking places of accursed Iblis, and take
Beware the lurking places of damned Satan
praise of Mary as a shield that wards off conceit.
And take the praise of Mary as a shield against harm
خذهاtake them نبالاًarrows منof التقديسsanctification محكمةًwell-crafted
خذها نبالاً من التقديس محكمةً
واستهدفand aim at الزهدrenunciation فيهاwith them تبلغyou will reach الهدفاthe target
واستهدف الزهد فيها تبلغ الهدفا
Take them as well-crafted arrows of sanctification,
Make it like arrows of sanctification, precise
and with them aim at renunciation; you will hit the mark.
And target asceticism through it to reach the goal
