طُوَيرٌa little bird فيin سُجَينٍa little prison منof سُهَيرِlittle sleeplessness
My little heart, from little nights of little thought,
My heart is a bird imprisoned in thoughts
is a little bird in a little prison of sleeplessness.
My body is a wolf in my imaginings
جُسيميmy little body منfrom لُويلاتيmy little nights ذُوَيبٌmelted away (diminutive)
كأنيas though I فيin بُوَيتٍa little house منof سُقَيرِlittle Saqar (Hell)
My little body has melted from my little nights,
My soul toils fruitlessly
as though I were in a little house of little Saqar.
It is said there is awe therein and fear
نُفَيسيmy little soul منfrom عُمَيليmy little work فيin بُوَيسٍlittle misery
وليسand is not نُويفعاًof a little use فيهاin it غُوَيريsomeone other than me (diminutive)
My little soul is in little misery from my little work,
Wondrously, there is evil in my goodness
and no one other than me is of any little use to it.
My life bound by laws, preserved from time
يقالit is said رُويهبٌa little monk فيهin him رُهَيبٌa little fear
عُجَيبيmy little wonder منat شُرَيرٍa little evil فيin خُوَيريmy little good
They say: a little monk with a little fear within.
And yet I bear the unjust upon my back
I marvel a little at the little evil within my little good.
My fate from my roots is entanglement
عُمَيريmy little life فيwithin قُوَينينٍa little rule صُوَينٍprotective (diminutive)
مُحَيريسُguarded (diminutive) الشُهَيرُthe little month منfrom الدُهَيرthe little time
My little life is within a little protective rule,
The devils of fate and destiny
its little month guarded against little time.
Slave to my nature, therein is my work
ومعand despite ذياكthat little thing إنيindeed I فيin شُقَيٍّlittle misery
مُحَيميلُladen (diminutive) الأُثَيمthe little sin علىon ظُهَيريmy little back
Yet despite that, I am in little misery,
My thoughts in times of intoxication
laden with little sin upon my little back.
Returning to my sins like a thread
دُوَيريmy little monastery منfrom ضُجَيريmy little fretfulness فيin سُجَيسٍlittle turmoil
شُوَيطينُa little devil الدُوَيرةِthe little house والدُوَيرand the little monastery
My little monastery is in little turmoil from my little fretfulness;
Living like snakes in holes
I am a little devil of the little house and the little monastery.
Defiantly flowing to my Lord
عُبَيدُa little slave بُطَينتيmy little gluttony وبهاand with it شُغَيليmy little concern
فُكَيريmy little thought فيin أُوَيقاتlittle moments السُكَيرthe little drunkenness
A little slave to my little gluttony, and my little concern is with it;
Intoxicated of mind without wine
my little thought is in the little moments of little drunkenness.
I've become like deaf ears
عُوَيدٍa little returner كالسُلَيكlike al-Sulayk إلىto أُثَيميmy little sin
حُيَيٌّa little lively one كالحُيَيَّةِlike the little snake فيin الوُكَيرthe little nest
A little returner, like al-Sulayk, to my little sin;
Wandering in the wilderness and settlements
lively as a little snake in the little nest;
My mind circles in our world
كُسَيلانٌa little sluggard عُنَيدَat أُمَيرِthe little command ربِّيmy Lord
سُكَيرانa little drunk العُقَيلthe little mind بلاwithout خُمَيرa little wine
a little sluggard at my Lord's little command;
My body circles in brotherhood
a little drunk in my little mind, without even a little wine.
My work like the dead without senses
وصرتُand I became مُثَيلa little proverb سمعٍhearsay كالمُعَيديlike al-Muʿaydi
سُوَيرٌa little wanderer فيin البُوَيدةthe little desert والحُضَيرand the little settled lands
And I have become a little byword of hearsay, like al-Muʿaydi,
As if my ignorance is in a grave
a little wanderer in the little desert and the little settled lands.
My tongue unleashed without discipline
عُقَيليmy little mind فيin عُوَيلمناour little world دُوَيرٌcircling (diminutive)
جُسَيميmy little body فيin الأُخَيَّةthe little tether فيin دُوَيرa little monastery
My little mind circles about in our little world;
As if I am among lions or leopards
my little body is bound by the little tether in a little monastery.
My sermon and words without action
عُمَيليmy little work كالمُوَيتlike the little dead one بلاwithout حُسَيسٍa little sensation
كأنيas though I منfrom جُهَيليmy little ignorance فيin قُبَيرa little grave
My little work is like a little dead thing, without the least feeling;
You see me like worthless plants in flowers
as though, through my little ignorance, I were in a little grave.
My tears from my dryness from my beloved
مُطَيليقُunrestrained (diminutive) اللُسَينِthe little tongue بلاwithout أُدَيبٍa little courtesy
كأنيas though I فيin أُسَيدٍa little lion أوor نُمَيرa little leopard
My little tongue runs free, without the least courtesy,
An ocean in an ocean in an ocean
as though I were in a little lion or a little leopard.
Flowing like tar upon my cheeks
وُعَيظيmy little preaching والقُوَيلand the little speech بلاwithout فُعَيلٍa little action
ترانيyou see me كالهُزَيِّرlike the little nightingale فيamong الزُهَيرthe little blossoms
My little preaching and little speech are without the least action;
Scorching my dryness from wakefulness
you see me like a little nightingale among the little blossoms.
And that hour for me is hope
دُمَيعيmy little tears منfrom جُفَينيmy little eyelid منfrom نُدَيميmy little remorse
بُحَيرٌa little sea فيin بُحَيرٍa little sea فيin بُحَيرa little sea
My little tears, from my little eyelid, from my little remorse,
Vast, or pure in vastness
are a little sea within a little sea within a little sea,
The throne of God I set in poison
جُوَيرٍflowing (diminutive) كالقُوَيقlike the Quwayq علىupon خُدَيديmy little cheek
مُقَيريحُsore (diminutive) الجُفَينthe little eyelid منfrom السُهَيرthe little sleeplessness
flowing like the Quwayq over my little cheek,
So not the light of sun or moon
my little eyelid sore from little sleeplessness.
Peace be upon you my Lord when you appeared
وتيّاكَand that little السُوَيعةthe little hour ليfor me رُجَيٌّa little hope
بُكَيرٌa little virgin بلrather طُهَيرٌa little purity فيamong البُكَيرthe little virgins
And at that little hour, I have a little hope:
The light of a radiance and bestowed light
a little virgin—nay, a little purity among little virgins.
عُرَيشlittle throne اللَهGod نُرتِyou shone فيin سُمَيٍّa little heaven
فماso what نورlight الشُمَيسةthe little sun والقُمَيرand the little moon
God's little throne, you shone in a little heaven;
what, then, is the light of the little sun and the little moon?
عليكupon you سلامpeace ربيmy Lord ماas long as تبدّىappears
ضُوَيُّa little gleam نُوَيرةٍa little fire وسَنىand the radiance نُوَيرa little light
My Lord's peace be upon you as long as there appears
the little gleam of a little fire and the radiance of a little light.
