قلsay للحبيبto the beloved الذيwho عزَّتwas precious محبتُهhis love
عنديto me وقدand indeed خاننيbetrayed me فيin عهدهhis covenant الذممُthe pledges
Tell the beloved whose love is precious
Tell the beloved whose love was dear to me,
to me, though pledges have betrayed me in his covenant:
Though he betrayed his vow and troth to me.
لاdo not تعذلنَّever reproach أخاًa brother شانتmarred حواسدُهhis enviers
نَضارةًbloom وأتىand came يشكوcomplaining لماof what يَصِمُdisgraces
Never reproach a brother whose enviers have marred
"Rebuke me not, though jealous foes assail,
his bloom, and who has come complaining of what disgraces him.
And youth's fresh blossoms into autumn fade.
إنif كانwas سرَّكمdelighted you ماwhat قالsaid حاسدُناour envier
فماthen no لجرحٍfor a wound إذاif أرضاكمpleased you ألمُpain
If what our envier said has delighted you,
If what the envious say gives joy to you,
then a wound has no pain if it pleases you.
Why should a wound that gives you joy cause pain?"
