للعقلfor the intellect والعقلand the intellect لاnot ينفكceases معقولاintelligible
Memory brings forth forms that stir the imagination
Remembrance conjures fanciful phantasms
For the intellect, and the intellect remains intelligible;
For the mind, and the mind cannot help but
عنهfrom it التصورconception موضوعاًposited ومرتفعاًand raised
عنbeyond غايةlimit الذكرmemory معقوداًbound ومحلولاand unbound
From it, conception is posited and raised
Conceive of it as object and rejection
Beyond memory's limit, bound and unbound.
Of the purpose of remembrance, constricted and unbound.
والفكرand thought فيin طبقاتlevels الفهمunderstanding منسرحٌroaming freely
And thought roams freely through the levels of understanding,
And thought roams the layers of understanding,
Increasing imagery within the instrument of imagination,
Increasing the imagination's imagining,
حتَّىuntil إذاwhen الفهمunderstanding حقَّقْverified ماwhat تصوَّرهconceived it
فيin منظرview العقلthe intellect مفصولاseparated وموصولاand connected
Until, when understanding has verified what it conceived
Until when understanding realizes what it imagined
In the intellect's view, separated and connected,
In the aspect of the mind, divided and conjoined.
حَنَىbent إليهtoward it الهوىpassion حتىuntil تريدَyou desire بهthrough it
مفهومmeaning ماwhat كانwas فيهwith it العقلthe intellect مشغولاoccupied
Passion inclines toward it, until through it you seek
Then desire inclines toward it, wanting
The meaning of what had occupied the intellect.
To grasp what the mind was engaged with.
فالذكرso memory كالشمlike smell موضوعاًas a subject ومحمولاand as a predicate
عنfrom حسهits sense العامgeneral مجلوّاًburnished ومصقولاand polished
Thus memory is like smell, as subject and predicate,
So remembrance is like scent set out and conveyed
From its general sense, burnished and polished.
Beyond its general sense, dissolved and refined.
ثمthen التصورconception معروضاًpresented لعارضهto its presenter
كالعينlike the eye تنظرsees فيهin it العرضbreadth والطولاand length
Then conception is presented to its presenter,
Then conception displayed to its occurrence
Like the eye that sees in it breadth and length.
Like the eye looking on extension and limit.
والفكرand thought كالذوقlike taste أوor كالنطقlike speech مشتَرَكاًshared
يدنوdraws near ويدبرand turns away مردوداًrejected ومقبولاand accepted
And thought, like taste or speech, is shared;
And thought is like taste or speech, sharing
It draws near and turns away, rejected and accepted.
In approach and withdrawal, refused and accepted.
والفهمand understanding كالسمعlike hearing يَقنعْis content منwith تَعقُّلِهِits reasoning

And understanding, like hearing, is content with its reasoning,
And understanding is like hearing, content in its reasoning
In the exposition of knowledge, forbidding and permitting.
In the context of knowledge, prohibited and analyzed.

Within it, the will advances toward its craving,
In it will progresses toward its passion
Like touch, it keeps the evidence of sensation manifest.
Like touch, keeping the proof of sense denoted.

These are the soul's powers in the human being; if they are present
These are the spirit's powers in man; if they collect
In the intellect, they make the unknown intelligible.
In reason, they make the unknown known.
فاحملso charge علىinto حربهاbattle against them ياO راهباًmonk أبداًforever
إنif لمnot تكنyou are قاتلاًa slayer أصبحتyou become مقتولاslain
So charge into battle against them, O monk, forever;
So take up arms against them forever, O monk,
If you are not a slayer, you will be slain.
If you cannot be a killer, you will become the killed.
