فقدfor ... may تقسواharden طباعthe natures ذويthose possessing اللآمَهْbaseness
إذاwhen ألبستَهاyou clothe them ثوبَthe robe of الكرامهْhonor
For the natures of the base may harden
When you clothe them in the robe of honor.
وتُصلحُهاand reforms them الإهانةُhumiliation حينwhen تقسواthey harden
كماjust as قدmay تصلحbenefit الجُعَلَthe dung beetle القُمامهrefuse
And humiliation reforms them when they harden,
Just as refuse may benefit the dung beetle.
فإنso if يكنِbe الهوانُabasement لهاfor them سلامَهْsafety
فلمthen not يكنbe الوقارrespect لهاfor them سلامهsafety
So if abasement is their safeguard,
Then respect is no safeguard for them.
فلوfor if تزكوflourish الكرامهhonor فيin لئيمٍa base man

For if honor could flourish in a base man,
Calamity would not have befallen Abu Dulama,

نبيّاًa prophet حينwhen مَخرقَpracticed imposture باليَمامهin al-Yamama
Nor would he, because of it and for its sake, have claimed
To be a prophet when he practiced imposture in al-Yamama.
كريمُnoble الطبعin nature إنif تُكرْمهyou honor him لانتgrew gentle
خلائقُهhis ways ويُظلمُand he is wronged بالملامهby reproach
A noble-natured man, if you honor him, grows gentle
In his ways, and is wronged by reproach.
يَزيدhe increases كرامةًin honor فيزيدand so he increases حُلْماًin forbearance
كماjust as ازدادgrew اللئيمُthe base man بهاthrough it صرامهin harshness
He grows in honor, and so grows in forbearance,
Just as the base man grows harsher through it.
إذاif أبصرتyou see بالمرءin a man اتضاعاًhumility
فلاthen do not تَجهلْهfail to recognize him منby تلكthat العلامهsign
If you see humility in a man,
Do not fail to recognize him by that sign.
ولاnor تركنrely إلىon مَنone who قالsays إنيindeed I

Nor trust one who says, 'I am...'
'And I am...' while his deeds are those of common folk.

ندامةُremorse over قوسهhis bow قطعتsevered بِهامَهhis thumbs
You will regret it later, like al-Kusa'i, when
Remorse over his bow severed his thumbs.
رويدكgently now لاdo not تلمblame فيfor الفَوتِwhat is lost نفساًa soul
فماfor what نَفعُuse الملامةblame فيin الندامهregret
Gently now: blame no soul for what is lost,
For what use is blame amid regret?
إذاif ناداكcalls you ذوone possessing جهلٍignorance لعقلٍto reason

If an ignorant man calls you to reason,
Answer him, turning away: 'O regretful one!'
فبينكماfor between you two علىin التحقيقtruth بونٌa gulf
يزيدُgrows كَبَينَماlike the distance between روماRome ورامهand Rama
For between you two there is, in truth, a gulf
That grows as wide as the distance between Rome and Rama.
فهلso, is it that أبصرتyou have seen ياO منone who عاشhas lived دهراًan age
عُقاباًan eagle كاسراًpredatory بيدَيْin the two hands of حَمامهa dove
Have you then seen, O you who have lived an age,
A predatory eagle in the hands of a dove?
كذلكlikewise لاnot ترىyou see أبداًever لئيماًa base man
إذاwhen أكرمتَهyou honor him عرفhe appreciates الكرامهhonor
Likewise, you will never see a base man
Who appreciates honor when you honor him.
