O reviler of the rose, you have gone too far in slander,

As the babbling wrongdoer lies in his excesses.

You angered Him whose splendor illumined the rose's blossom,

In transgression; so God cast you into His wrath.

You spoke ill of beauty, you there, and presented it

Distorted, and so lost sound judgment in misjudging it.

Does one afflicted in his eye praise the large-eyed,

Or does one laid low praise the downpour for its drops?

Why, O dung-beetle by nature, do you loathe that

Whose luster has charmed in its picker's palm,

And whose beauties everyone has united in praising?

So you were more repulsive than one who erred in his picking.

Do you not see your yellow tooth, as they draw back—

The lips—from it, and the likeness is complete in its form:

    Like a mule's anus when made cup-shaped,

After defecation, with dung still left at its center.
