Ardent longing and sorrow have mingled in my heart.

So here I am, not sober—and how could sobriety be mine?

I withdrew into solitude, my heart absorbed in love.

So let a heart suffice you whose solitude demands preoccupation.

So I conceal a fire that torment has kindled,

Yet its course becomes plain from the traces of its spread.

Although in love and longing I am unjust,

Subtle yet dense, wasted by separation and love.

And I deem plain declaration better than veiled allusions.

And can disguise succeed when absentmindedness lays it bare?

So I recite a verse whose meter love has adorned,

About Mary; in the art of prosody, it is a source of pride.

Since the 'but' in my praise has qualified her attributes,

And there is no fault, no wonder either, nor anything strange.

Thus she grew exalted, and by this grew precious, and rose above

All others, until townsfolk and nomads submitted.

Where, then, is a righteous angel? Where is his reach?

For that very reach left him behind hers.

    The prophets and messengers ran the course of her excellence;

Yet how far any racing is from attaining her excellence!

As her worth grew precious, she rose to nearness to her Lord.

So she became his mother—how splendid that exaltation!

And virginity adorned her among women,

As the cypress adorned the trees in her garden.

O singer gathering the sweetness of her praise,

Mention her again; that sweetness will delight us.

And never speak of her purity by comparison with another,

For there is no good in living without purity.

Lo, love's purity and our purity are twin offshoots.

Then bring her a peer—but how could she have a peer?

O Virgin, you have taken possession of my limbs.

Thus love of you forms part of every limb of mine.

So no limb of my being remained allotted

To anyone but you; rather, my whole being is a limb joined to yours.

And I exult; a tremor seizes me at the thought of you,

As a swaying bough trembled when exultation shook it.

Your pardon erases my sin when I come in obedience.

And were there no sin, pardon would never be known.
