1. أذوب إذا رأيت يسوع يوماً

    يدانُ كمجرمٍ بين الرجالِ

    I melt if ever I behold Jesus

    Condemned like a criminal among men.

  2. وأغرب منه عبدٌ حَدَّ موتاً

    على رب الأسافل والأعالي

    And stranger than that: a servant decreed death

    Upon the Lord of those below and those on high.

  3. يتوِّج رأسَه إكليلُ شوكٍ

    أسنَّتُه أحدُّ من النبال

    A crown of thorns crowns his head;

    Its spearpoints are sharper than arrows.

  4. وجاد بنفسه كرماً وجوداً

    وأين الجود من هذا النوال

    And he gave himself in generosity and bounty;

    And what is generosity beside this gift?

  5. ومدَّ على الصليب بكل شوقٍ

    يميناً لا تطول إلى الشمال

    And with all longing he stretched upon the cross

    A right hand that does not reach toward the left.

  6. ونكَّس رأسه المرفوع طوعاً

    لأمر أبيه عن أهل الضلال

    And willingly he bowed his upraised head

    In obedience to his Father's command, for those astray.

  7. وسلَّم قلبه وحشاه نهباً

    وسلْباً للصوارم والعوالي

    And he surrendered his heart and entrails as plunder

    And spoil for keen-edged swords and long spears.

  8. أيا شمس ارجعي رَجعاً سريعاً

    لقد غلبت عليك يد الليالي

    O sun, turn back swiftly!

    The hand of nights has surely prevailed over you.

  9. ويا أرض احذري حيث الأناسي

    لأن العدل دِينَ من المحال

    And O earth, beware where mortals dwell,

    For justice was condemned by falsehood.

  10. ويا موسى كليم اللَه جدِّد

    أساطيرَ الشريعة بالسؤال

    And O Moses, who conversed with God, renew

    The records of the Law through questioning.

  11. ويا هارون خبِّر عن أناسٍ

    رأوا كفر الجميل من الجمال

    And O Aaron, tell of a people

    Who saw ingratitude as a thing of beauty.

  12. ويا حزب النبيين استعدوا

    فراراً من بني ذات النكال

    And O company of prophets, prepare yourselves

    In flight from the sons of the bearer of chastisement.

  13. ويا حزب اليمين اثبُت يميناً

    ولا تسقُط سقوط بني الشمال

    And O company of the right, stand firm on the right,

    And do not fall like the sons of the left.

  14. ويا أرباب دين الكفر ضمُّوا

    إليكم من بهم كُفرُ الفعال

    And O lords of the religion of unbelief, gather

    To yourselves those whose deeds show unbelief.

  15. ويا نار الجحيم قِدِي وزيدي

    على حزب اليهود ولن تَزالي

    And O fire of Hell, burn and grow fiercer

    Against the company of the Jews, and you shall never cease.

  16. ويا جوق الملائك لا تخافوا

    على قلب الإله فغير بال

    And O choir of angels, do not fear

    For God's heart—for it is imperishable.

  17. محبة آدمٍ وبنيه صارت

    له قلباً حوى دَرَج المعالي

    Love for Adam and his sons became

    A heart for him, encompassing the ranks of exaltation.

  18. تناول آدمٌ وبنوه منه

    ثمار الفوز من شجر الكمال

    Adam and his sons took from him

    The fruits of salvation from the trees of perfection.

  19. فأُلِّهَ ثم قُدِّس ثم أُحيِي

    كما قد مات من ثمر المُحال

    So he was deified, then sanctified, then brought to life,

    Just as he had died from the fruit of falsehood.

  20. ألا يا حُبُّ قد أَنَّست ربّاً

    وألَّهتَ التراب ولن تبالي

    Ah, O Love, you have made a Lord human,

    And deified the dust, and you will not care.

  21. فدع قلبي يذوب وأَسقِ ريّاً

    بماء نِصالك الحسنى نصالي

    So let my heart melt, and fully quench

    My blades with the water of your fairest blades,

  22. فيَسبِكَ ذوبُه قلباً جديداً

    ويزهو بماء رونقكم جمالي

    So its molten substance may cast a new heart,

    And my beauty may shine with the sheen of your splendor.
