    And many a tribe has ignoramuses for wise men,

    In a town whose fools are its jurists.

    O community that has wronged its subjects to no purpose,

    As though its sages were its enemies!

    The subjects seek their welfare from their father,

    Yet their fathers bar them from their welfare.

    The calamity—no calamity is like it—

    Is the forefathers' sin, which their children swallow.

    I did pass by her wall, and at her wall

    Was unrest; I was troubled—how could I meet her?

    O town that menstruated, whose husband—the

    Lawful one—was kept from approaching her by her courses.

    She came to you from spurious learning, menstruating,

    Drunk; her debauchery and adultery became notorious.

    لم يُدرَ من إِقوائِها إِقواؤُها

    She fell desolate, and laid waste to seas and schools;

    Her faulty rhyme could not be told from her desolation.

    Rebuke me, and you spur me on, envious one, for I have

    A soul whose eagerness grows with rebuke.

    فَتَزيَّنَت بِشِعارها شُعَراؤُها

    Poets composed for her when they became aware of her;

    So her poets adorned themselves in her garb.

    فَثَرَت وفاضَ على الزَبون ثَراؤُها

    She plied the finest trade in God's market;

    She grew rich, and her wealth overflowed upon the customer.

    عَزَّت وَذَلَّ وأينَ مِنهُ عَزاؤُها

    The envious one, with his kind, sought her ruin;

    She rose in honor, he was abased; her fortitude is beyond him.

    When the base exceed their bounds

    In baseness, ill are their passage and their recompense.

    Glory to Him who exalted kings and brought them low,

    For governance, while its poor became rulers.

    How can one abase a man for whom

    Divinity's alif and yāʾ are like a bracelet?

    O Metropolitan Abd Allah—rather,

    O you through whom the souls' hope has grown!

    لم يَخفَ من شمس السَماءِ ضِياؤُها

    Fear not the enemies of your excellence when they howl;

    The radiance of heaven's sun is not concealed.

    If the envious one has stirred them into gales,

    Then God commands their gentle breezes to blow.

    Since a breeze of purity spread across the horizons,

    All people said, 'Its fragrance comes from you.'

    Stop, envious one, for the sun of his deeds

    Drives the eyes back with its splendor and radiance.

    Indeed, the Church remains ever splendid,

    And today, in this prelate, her splendor has grown.

    She rejoiced in him when she saw him upon her head,

    A crown; and her leaders took pride in him.

    She came, having bound her banner to him,

    Since he came with her allegiance pledged to him.

    ولأَنهُ فَضلٌ لهُ أَسماؤُها

    For he is a prelate, and her deeds are his;

    And he is excellence itself, and her names are his.

    A king whose virtues lead spare mounts

    For others, till their bounties have embraced them all.

    May you remain, my lord, immersed in favor,

    Until the Spirit says that you are its tāʾ.
