كأنas though علىupon وجْناتهhis cheeks الحسنَbeauty ناقشُan engraver
A beloved of ours is discussed among symbols,
A beloved of ours debates amidst symbols
as though beauty were an engraver upon his cheeks.
As though beauty were debating his cheeks
تراءىhe appeared لناto us بدراًas a full moon وقدand indeed كانhe had been كامناًhidden
يواريconceals سناهhis radiance التمَّfull فيin الليلthe night غاطشُdarkness
He appeared to us as a full moon, though he had been hidden,
He appeared to us as a full moon though he was hidden
while darkness concealed his full radiance in the night.
His brilliance obscured by the dark of night
فأشرقthen he shone شمساًas a sun يحجبeclipses النورَthe light نورُهhis light
عيونُthe eyes الدراريof the brilliant stars عنfrom سناهhis radiance دواهشdazzled
Then he shone as a sun, his light eclipsing light;
He shone like a sun whose light outshone the light
the eyes of the brilliant stars are dazzled by his radiance.
The eyes of the virgins were dazzled by his brilliance

Symbolism is his robe, embroidered by prophecy;
The symbol is his garb embroidered with prophecy
it came to us plainly, unsullied by any embellisher.
It came to us openly, unsullied by vain talk
فشيخٌso an elder كطفلٍlike a child مُبدَعٍcreated وهوyet he مُبدِعٌa creator

So he is an elder like a created child, yet he is a creator.
A wise elder yet creative youth
And how many a digger has gone astray digging for the treasure!
How many strayed in the pits yet he sought treasure
أتىhe came يُنعشُto revive الثقلينhumankind and jinn باهيresplendent in جَمالِهhis beauty
ولكنهyet he فيناamong us نَعيشٌborne on a bier وناعشand a reviver
He came to revive humankind and jinn, radiant in his beauty,
He came to revive the two domains with his beauty
yet among us he is both bier-borne and life-giving.
Yet through us he lived and fluttered
هُنالكthere عاشlived الناسpeople فيin موتthe death حبهمof their beloved
ولوand if لمnot يمتhe died ماnot كانthere would be فيamong الناسpeople عائشanyone living
There, people lived through their beloved's death;
There people lived amidst their love's death
had he not died, no one among people would have lived.
Had he not died, love would not have endured
فأحياso he revived حشاشاتٍremnants of life لناof ours بحشيشةٍwith an herb
ذكيةِfragrant أصلٍof root لنwill never تراهاsee it الحشائشthe grasses
So he revived our lingering sparks of life with an herb
So he revived for us bashful gazelles
of fragrant root, which the grasses will never behold.
With clever, original wit unseen in others

Dew lies upon it, distilled from its daisies,
The dew was distilled from their meadows
and beneath it is a cheek of his, which the rose scratches.
Under it, a cheek the roses timidly desired
فإنso if كنتyou are مشتاقاًyearning إليهfor him فنادِهthen call to him
إذاwhen ماever دهاكassails you البينseparation والدهرُand time باطشstriking fiercely
So if you yearn for him, call to him
If you long for him, call out to him
whenever separation assails you and time deals fierce blows.
When separation and time oppress you
فلمfor not يبقremained فيamong العشاقthe lovers قلبٌa heart متيمٌenraptured
بذاكwith that الهوىpassion إلّاexcept وأصماهand struck it dead رائشa fletcher
For no heart among lovers remains enraptured
No lover remains enamored of that love
by that passion without a fletcher having struck it dead.
Except the longing left him raving
هوhe الحبlove لاdo not تُذهلكdistract you هندٌHind وآلُهاand her kin
فماfor whatever دونهbesides him منof آلthe kin of هندٍHind فواحشabominations
He is love; let not Hind and her kin distract you.
It is love, do not be fooled by an Indian idol
For all besides him among Hind's kin are abominations.
For compared to him, Indian idols are corrupt
فكلso every جمالٍbeauty دونbeside بدريْmy full moon مشوَّهٌdisfigured

Every beauty beside my full moon is disfigured;
All beauty besides his crescent is distorted
their eyes, to my mind, were begotten by bats.
In my eyes, their sleep is but a doze

Can they, then, behold his beauty in its perfection
Can they fully perceive his beauty?
for long, when they are common, weak-sighted folk?
Bewildered, for they are commoners, fools
وقدand indeed سرنيdelighted me ذاكthat النجيعshed blood مضرَّجاًsmeared crimson
وأعجبنيand pleased me دمعٌtears لهof his وهوwhile he جاهشbursting into tears
And that shed blood delighted me, smeared crimson;
Yet I was delighted by the wounded gazelle
and I admired his tears as he burst into weeping.
And his weeping captivated me

So, O longing, do not weigh upon him, for he is
So longing, do not burden him
tender, and this longing is abrasive by nature.
For he is delicate, and longing is harsh

His fair mother has beauty enough, and she
His fair mother's beauty suffices
is the virgin, not what the slanderers allege.
She is the virgin, not what pretenders claim

She is the nursing virgin, and the description is astonishing,
She is the chaste wet nurse, strange is the story
even if Baraqish garbles the symbolism concerning her.
Even if the cryptic text denied her traits

He is the trembler, unknown in origin and occupation;
He is the unknown, strange in origin and craft
can the claim, then, prove true, when the claim itself trembles?
Can such inconsistent tales be believed?
فطوبىso blessedness لأمٍّto a mother وابنُهاwhile her son كانwas ميتاًdead
وماand not عاشhe lived حتىuntil ماتhe died والموتand death ناعشa reviver
Blessed, then, is a mother whose son was dead,
Happy is the mother whose son was dead
and did not live until he died—and death revives.
And did not live until he died amidst ravaging death
ولمand did not ينهشbite التنينُthe dragon جسماًa body مسمَّماًpoisoned

Nor did the dragon bite a poisoned body
The dragon did not savage the surrendered body
with its fangs until it saw death biting.
Until it saw death's grasp

وذوand the possessor of الرأيjudgment لمdid not يفهمهunderstand him والرأيwhile judgment طائشreckless
So this is the one raised after his death,
This is the messenger after his death
and the man of judgment did not understand him, his judgment astray.
The wise did not understand him, for wisdom wanders
