إذا أطراك إنسانٌ بمدحٍ

إذا أطراك إنسانٌ بمدحٍ

فأطرق نحو قلبك وامتحنْهُ

فأطرق نحو قلبك وامتحنْهُ

If someone extols you with praise,

If someone praises you,

Then bow your head toward your heart and examine it.

Bow your head towards your heart to test it.

فإن أرضاك زد للَه شكراً

فإن أرضاك زد للَه شكراً

وإن أغواك فُز بالبعد عنهُ

وإن أغواك فُز بالبعد عنهُ

Then, if it satisfies you, give greater thanks to God;

If it pleases you, thank God even more.

And if it leads you astray, triumph by keeping away from it.

If it fools you, hurry to get away from him.
