    آخرها ظالمٌ وأوَّلُها

    A soul has come to defy you even in its easiest part;

    its end is unjust, and so is its beginning.

    I have seen it never cease to kill,

    while being killed; hypocrisy kills it.

    Because of it I spend the night before doom's fang,

    and its claw, while destruction encompasses it.

    I sleep with stinging creatures in my bed

    and my bedding; its boulder serves as the pillow.

    How many an ordeal have I come to be enfolded in,

    through its waywardness, while God rejects it!

    إدربارُها يدنيه أعزلُها

    Its spearman keeps its advance far off;

    its unarmed one brings its retreat near.

    I have been perplexed over disciplining it,

    for righteousness does not know it.

    It loses patience at deliverance, just as

    its watering place overflows amid evils.

    I wrestled with it for good, while I am drawn

    to the depths of perdition by its shoulders.

    أحببت ما قد يعاف فاعلُها

    If you say 'No,' it answers you defiantly;

    you have loved what its doer may abhor.

    ها قد أحارَ العقولَ جدولُها

    I condemn its watering place, yet drink from it;

    lo, its stream has bewildered minds!

    For I see its sweet, fresh water

    as its bitter brine; its clear water is its most perplexing.

    The water of righteousness dwindles within it, just as

    its tongue pours forth the water of corruption.

    وا عجباً والسمومُ مَنهلُها

    I give it drink again, though poisons are in its water;

    how strange! Poisons are its watering place.

    أهجو حكيماً أتاك يسألُها

    I lament the soul's affliction, then give thanks for it;

    I revile a sage who came to you questioning it.

    So marvel at a complainer who came to you praising it,

    and a learned man led astray by one ignorant of it.

    أتعبني في الأمور أسهلُها

    It has left me bewildered amid thoughts;

    the easiest of affairs has wearied me.

    I solve its problem, yet am baffled

    by its opposite; contradiction is its greatest difficulty.

    If you approach it with right on the surface,

    its greatest perplexity meets you within its folds.

    If it bolts while the reins are in my hand,

    I come with my Lord's Gospel to fetter it.

    Woe to it, since its fairest has become

    its ugliest, and its best has become vile!

    نقيضها للعيان يَبذلُها

    Indeed, judgments have been wrongly reversed;

    their contrary lays them out before the eyes.

    إن الذي قد شَنئتُ يَقبلُها

    Indeed, what I have loved, it hates;

    indeed, what I have loathed accepts it.

    يوصلها ما كان يَفصلُها

    In it I approve what I do not see done;

    what once separated it now unites it.

    The one you see praising it has marred it,

    and the one you see reproaching it has adorned it.

    Let no one who comes to you defending it wear himself out

    with his praise, for the contrary abandons it.

    If he says that perfection is its splendor,

    I answer him: 'And hypocrisy undoes it.'

    Or says that death is its mount,

    I answer him: 'And destruction is its bearer.'

    Or says that fidelity is its ruler,

    I answer him: 'It continues to neglect the soul.'

    Or says that blindness is in its hand,

    I answer him: 'And error is its fingertips.'

    Or says that bliss is its loftiest height,

    I answer him: 'And Hell is its lowest.'

    Or says that ease is its racecourse,

    I answer him: 'And humiliation is its feet.'

    Or says that hope is its mainstay,

    I answer him: 'It continues to grant the soul respite.'

    Or says that affection is its nature,

    I answer him: 'It leads the soul toward evils.'

    Or says that strife is its tempter,

    I answer him: 'It continues to bewilder the soul.'

    For the soul is its own devil; its very self

    treacherously slays it, and obstinacy kills it.

    Trust this that I have recounted to you,

    and the grounds of the saying explain it.

    None has tamed this soul except one filled with fear,

    who spends the night before dawn reproaching it.

    He brandishes this vigil, striking it,

    thus he crushes the foes and abandons it.

    He stretches out above the sea of his thought

    his snares, which he will plunge deep.

    Perhaps he may catch his thoughts—the

    finest—and reject the ugliest among them.

    He speaks humbly when there arrive

    messages of hope that he sends forth:

    إن سادها دانت كواهلُها

    'There is no such arbiter to heal it;

    if he masters it, its shoulders bow.'

    So reform, then, O God, its corrupter,

    from an end approved by its beginning.

    عليك يا ذا الجلال أَتكِلُها

    And open for it the door of manifest perfection;

    to You, O Possessor of Majesty, I entrust it.

    And forgive it the wrong deliberately contrived,

    which drives him farther away and fetters it.

    You are the one who came to rescue it

    from death and doom, and carry it

    to bliss whose wellspring adorns

    its beauty; beauty is what makes it fair.

    Until, when it comes to You submissive,

    indebted, while the reckoning questions it,

    it says: 'Lord, have mercy, and rejoice

    in my repentance, for hope accepts it.'
