عقلي يحدثه لسانٌ نائحُ
إنif كنتyou are نواحاًa frequent mourner فأنتthen you الصالحُthe righteous one

A lamenting tongue speaks to my mind:
My mind is addressed by a lamenting tongue
If you are a mourner, then you are righteous.
If you are lamenting, then you are righteous

The lightning of weeping did not appear except you came
clouds of tears, clasping hands with the lightning.
The clouds of tears greet the lightnings

So it and my tears seem like a bird,
It's as if it and my tear are a bird
roaming from the lid of my eye, or departing.
Roaming from the eyelid of my eye or resting

So its tears are like reliance, and I
am purified by its baptism and reconciled.
Am purified by its ritual ablution, reconciled

So humility suits my weeping as
my laughter opposes it; that is plain.
My laughter contrasts it, and that's obvious

Hell, then, is the foremost cause of mourning,
For weeping is the most despised cause of hell
as fire is kindled by a spark-striking flint.
Like a fire lit by striking flint

Whoever's habit is to weep, he

In all aspects laments according to his passion

So chime, for towards my tear you call

Whoever remembers the Judge slays his sorrow
Whoever remembers the Judge, he slaughters his sorrow
with mourning’s sword, and hope is the slayer.
With a sword of weeping, and hope is the slaughterer

Whoever does not mourn in God—his mourning strays
Whoever did not weep for God, his weeping strayed
into despair; despair is a shameful evil.
In despair, for despair is manifest evil

O conceited one, desist from deceptive mourning.
Oh admirer, refrain from deceitful weeping
How can you mourn while the flint of your evil strikes sparks?
How can you weep while the spark of idolatry strikes?

There is no mourning at all where the flesh finds ease;
No weeping at all where there is the comfort of glad tidings
this one swims one day, and that one wields a spear.
Of one who swims one day, and that is a spear-thrower

Away from your agonizing weeping and flee, oh fleer!

If you weep while sated, that is error;
If you cry satiated, that is misguidance
rather, the frequent faster’s tear is beneficent rain.
Rather, the faster's tear is beneficial rain

The Judge asks no miracle of us,
The Judge does not ask us for a sign
but asks for the mourning that I praise.
Rather He asks for the weeping that I am praising
