I yearn for the holy valley, with longing
I yearn for the sacred valley with desire
for it, for its sight delights my eyes.
For it, as its view delights my eye

The scented breeze passes through it
by flowers there, whose radiance gleams.
With flowers whose radiance is snowy white

Gaze at the valley's description, for its mountains
resemble Eden, and its plain is aglow.
Spoke of Eden and its plains are carpeted

Mountains on whose peaks honor's might is seen
so let the cities' abject foot limp in fetters.
So leave the feet of cities' humiliation limping

for your praise of the holy valley delights.
For your praise of the sacred valley brings joy

You see the babbling of water in its corners

Its pebbles like pearls, blooming and glittering

There the arak tree's branches shelter a bird,
The flocks of partridges were protected in it
singing among its boughs and chattering.
Singing in its branches and chirping

The shadows of its palms spared it
the sun's rays, which turn aside from its refuge.

Shading its yards with a yellowness
and its depths blaze from her rage.
While its insides blaze from its wrath

Alas, since its haunts grew distant from my eyes,
Oh what a pity, since my eye left its sanctuary
and distance's steed is saddled for estrangement and parting.
And the edge of my eyelid limps to separation and distance

Oh my mountains, Lebanon, peace be upon you
a greeting wafting with the sweet fragrance of praise for you.

How many a sojourn I had in that abode,
For I have in that place many a gathering
my tongue forever repeating the dwelling's praise.
Where my tongue praises the home fondly

There I gathered the ripe fruit of chastity,
I gained from it plentiful chaste fruits
for many a day, my heart more radiant and joyful through piety.
Filled, as my heart was adorned with piety and joy

No hardship makes the soul miserable among them;
So there is no embarrassment that hurts the soul among them
and far be it from you to feel distress when you dwell with them.
And forbid that I become embarrassed with them

And how many a special, favored friend I had
and the blessings of God's grace shone over me.
And God's grace was upon me and showered

Then my friends left me lonely with repentance
and my tears roll down over its ruins.
And my tears roll over their ruins

God decreed separation against my will; yet sometimes
God ordained, despite my resistance, my separation
a young man finds good in evil, and prevails.
And perhaps what afflicts the youth is good in the end

For I have from those wishes messages
long ones; without them I would never have gone out.
Endless, and without them I would not have left

which nearly splits the sorrowful heart apart.

if friends tasted it, they would never put on airs.
If felt by the wise, they would not jest

My friend, do not weep for the misery of my humiliation
rather, come to my aid: today I am distressed.
Rather, help me, for today I am troubled

My two friends, this is where lamentation and weeping meet;
My friend, this is the meeting place of grief and weeping
where is a brother to relieve me in hardships?
So where can I find, in adversities, relief?

So do not, on its account, mistake my tear for blood;
Do not think my tears are blood
but it is a tear of parting, stained with blood.
Rather, they are tears mixed with separation's blood

blood and tears mingled by passionate longing.
Blood and tears blended with coquetry

my remorse over it is ugly, and my sin uglier.

A secret calls me in the folds of my intimacy
and hope's robe, my friend, is armored by it:
And the dress of hope - leave it tightly clasped

perhaps God will grant relief after your endurance.
Perhaps God, after your patience, will grant relief
