O you who remind me of the days of youth,

And of life in those dwelling places,

    And familiar haunts I left

As a refuge for my own misdeeds,

And a precious lifetime I sold

For a cheap life, like a libertine.

You reminded me of things in which

The noble was like the base,

    And wonders I had imagined

Like the beauties of a wondrous garden.

    No wonder you deceive me,

Like blossoms in the season of spring.

Leave me and mind your own affairs; I am not

One to answer you or listen to you.

Let me lament, so I may buy back

My squandered life from its squanderer.

    فالموت أقربُ من رجوعي

    Never shall what has passed return;

For death is nearer than my return.

A lifetime whose best I squandered

    Between debauchery and infatuation.

And the intercessor has gone far away; where is one

Who will call, so my intercessor may come to me?

Fie upon a soul whose habit

    Favors descent over ascent!

    Whether you descend or ascend,

I am not inclined to return.

You and I are as different as a child of weaning

    Age and a suckling infant.

Youth has gone, and who would regard

The new and the cast-off alike?

And I felt decay within the fire

That had been kindled between my ribs.

And my strength was drained from me,

And my tears were drawn from me drop by drop.

Blessed is he who, through them, has become

Clad in the robe of humility,

And has turned away from his

    Notorious error before setting out.

There, then, his reward is granted

By the Lord of all, on behalf of all.
