O you who enforce the Church's law by force,

Why, then, have you acquired justice and gained recompense through it?

You spoke truly, but the times are deceitful,

And each has a craft by which he seeks work.

So when we saw the age inclining toward truth,

We inclined, and darkness became justice in our law.

And had we not judged unjustly, our honor would have become—

And the honor of him we protect—a target of reproach among mankind.

For we dwell in his valley, and whatever

He sees, we see, and desire binds us together.

So do not condemn suspicious conduct in us and in him,

If the eye's tears wash away this sin.

For many a lapse has come in robes of repentance,

Dragging hems with which it conceals a deed.

    فكم صدَّقت رسلاً وكم كذَّبت رسلا

    And before, she had disgraced her messenger's station;

How many messengers she believed, and how many messengers she called liars!

Behold, only the wise man's reason is free

From ignorance in what calls for reason and ignorance.
