And Joshua had no part in that affair.

    تجول به الأبرار طوراً وتهجع

    A day on which the river of delight overflows;

The righteous roam within it at times, and slumber.

O hills of the Mount, in the sanctuary's most blessed quarter,

May morning clouds water you with what refreshes and benefits,

And keep far from you what disfigures and appalls.

On the day of his transfiguration the hills shine.

His ascent to the Mount makes clear that he

Is God, to whom all creatures submit.

His witness is a voice that came from his heaven:

'This indeed is my beloved Son; listen to him.'

Their leader, that intercessor whose plea is accepted,

And James, with John the beloved, who rose high

Through openly beholding him, an eloquent voice among the apostles.

What they saw of his splendor astonished them,

And that shimmering radiance left them dazed.

Pavilions of light, luxuriating in glory.

The radiance of his divinity filled every shrine,

And behold, it wafts that sweet fragrance.

It is not like a light that bears every proof,

    As al-Ghazzi, that squanderer, claims.

He did not recognize that garment as a tattered robe,

Though it is openly patched with falsehood.

Where, then, do you see the light the apostles sought,

And where a fire whose radiance terrifies?

Those are lights in which the Son abides,

But this is the fire that does no good.

That is the light whose shining forth is genuine,

And this is the lying, fabricated light.

For this reason the Son revealed the essence of his light,

To refute opinions overrun by weakness,

Like those of the sect that went astray concerning him, whose chief

    Is Gregorios, the obstinate reviler.

They say of the light of the day when he was revealed,

    In error: 'It is the Spirit, the exalted Comforter;

As he was a dove on the day of baptism,

So on this day he was a shimmering light.'

Thus they did wrong, straying into a refuted error,

And ignorantly deified what was created, without understanding.

But we say that this which is seen

Is the glory of humanity, giving light and gleaming.

His hidden divinity has revealed its glory,

And his bounded humanity shines with light,

Signifying through the twofold nature that he

Is God and man, to put the reviler to shame.

They transcended the density of humanity, though humanity restrains.

By the sight of those two that he revealed, he meant

That in him authority over both companies is united.

When Simon the Rock beheld the flash of his light,

He answered in a voice the deaf could almost hear:

'My God, we are content to dwell here,

And I am obedient to what you reveal to me.

Three, whose shade will shelter you, spacious as they are.'

While he was drinking wishes from their cup,

And sipping the heady wine of his desire as he supplicated,

A cloud from the unseen world enveloped them,

And spread above them a canopy that would not disperse.

They fell upon the pebbly ground in terror at what they saw,

As though asleep under the sway of fearful imaginings.

Jesus came to them, then called to them; and though

They had feared him, when they saw him they took heart.

They returned, still within its bounds, singing to him:

'Blessed is the Lord, to whom praise ascends.'

After their departure the angels turned aside,

To ward from the radiant Mount whatever brings fear.

May morning clouds water you, passing rightward and leftward,

And may fragrant ambergris waft its scent within you.

Receive a greeting whose fragrance, whenever it appears,

Perfumes the east wind's breaths and spreads sweet scent.
