O breeze we see quenching burning thirst,

Before dawn, shall we see you heal the ailing?

Turn aside awhile, lingering in abodes

That show you something wondrous every day.

Take my greeting as perfume for your sweet wafting,

O breeze, and be a messenger for one like me,

To a virgin whose beauty is perfection,

And a chaste maiden who shows you a beautiful deed.

God adorned her with virtues until

He singled her out to be a virgin mother.

Mary the Virgin, possessed of every perfection—

Creation intoned her name in solemn chant.

For she is a mother whose messengers are angels,

Racing one another morning and evening.

    هكذا اللَه أورد التنزيلا

    The Word of God came to be born of her;

    Thus God conveyed the revelation.

The peoples of the world bowed down before her,

And her radiance illumines our minds.

O Virgin, I came to your door in longing

For your exaltedness; receive a humbled servant,

Whom humiliation tosses about with force,

Who has found no way to escape it.

Time bore down upon me and assailed me

With an affliction that became a deep-seated illness.

I was struck by the enemy's arrows,

Nay, wounded, wasted by illness, and ailing.

And I squandered my life in vain; indeed,

Through my desires I committed a grievous sin.

    بمساويَّ كنت عبداً ذليلا

    Through my sins I was an undutiful son;

Through my misdeeds I was an abased servant.

In seas of humiliation I became a drowning man.

Do you see anyone in existence as foolish as I?

Among my brothers and companions I became

    All but dead from ruin.

The claws of time sank into me until

They left me slain in the hollows.

Where is my claim, 'I left my world of comfort'?

Where is my claim, 'I cast off my roots'?

Where is my claim, 'I forsook life's pleasures,

A dwelling, companionship, and a dear friend,

Seeking the righteousness of monastic life, I had

There sold my desires in an outright sale'?

I betrayed what I had pledged in my words

By my deeds; thus I was an intruder in it.

My brothers, O men noble in every virtue,

Have mercy on me, for I have become bewildered.

And aid me before the intercessor, for I

Have become a guest in her spacious refuge,

Humbly clutching the hems of Mary's robe,

Crying for aid, repenting, and pleading.

    أنت ملجا الخطاة دهراً طويلا

    O Virgin, a sinner like me has come to you;

You are the refuge of sinners through long ages.

Do not turn away from one truly shrouded

In his blood, for I have grown emaciated.

Do not turn away from the sinner, for I

Will not turn from you for a day or an hour.

Do not turn away: the sun of my life has inclined

Toward sunset, and my sun is fading away.

Will you see me gain pardon from you,

Or see me attain union through you?

    كن أميناً ومؤمناً ورسولا

    Then come, O doubter, find certainty;

Be trustworthy, a believer, and a messenger.

Sing Mary's praises as long as you live, and you will be guided.

Do not be without faith, lest you fall away.

Rise, hasten, and hail her with peace:

O Virgin, you will never cease to be a virgin.

God suffices you; if you pass through Lebanon

Just before dawn, then chant and say:

Ah, may God preserve my bond with Lebanon!

Shall I see myself visiting those ruins?

O stranger, you have settled in a land of exile

That has shown you the mighty abased within it.

Rise, greet the Virgin, and sing

Long greetings of peace to Mary the Virgin.

Peace be upon you as long as lightning flashes

In the dark nights, stretching far and wide.

Peace be upon you as long as thought pours forth

Verse, though it had been weary before.

Peace be upon you as long as sweet fragrance spreads

From the greeting that is Gabriel's own.
