Love of money is the most wretched affliction you have suffered,

if you are, O monk, being toyed with by anxiety.

For whoever one day wavers in his fidelity

prostrates himself before the idol of money, which he loves.

For our nature leads us to every evil,

except delight in money, O discerning one.

So let no years of illness deceive you,

nor let hardships fraught with fear terrify you.

For this is the schemer’s trick, which he whispers,

so that you may be bound, concealing what brings precedence.

Remember now what has been said, heeding it:

The root of evils is money, if you would believe it.
