My two friends, take me past an ascetic's dwelling,

so we may revive the yearnings of perishing souls.

Dwellings resembling Paradise's gardens, and their people

are angels in a community of shared life.

And do not reproach me, you two, if I turn toward them

and turn aside from the paths of death and destruction.

Hermitages on Mount Sinai have indeed stirred my longing,

so I lodged my heart among those hermitages.

Indeed, the shrines on their mountain have struck us dead,

so I became a dead man between one who laments and one who slays.

How often its ruins have smelted, then sanctified

souls—my soul for the holiness of those ingots!

May God water the Balance of Hearts, where so many

hearts have poured their longing into the kneeling places!

And how many subtleties its tilts have weighed,

in which we distinguish the forgetful from the wayfarer.

Longing for Shayhat has swayed our hearts,

as the paupers' heart inclines toward wealth.

No ascetic has stood there, holding

God's hand, but a hand that holds fast has guided him.

How lovely is the Skete, adorned

with its ascetics, smiling through laughing lips!

    فأحسنْ به ثوباً لأفضل حائك

    Its people have woven there a robe of virtues;

what a splendid robe, by the finest weaver!

One is a naked monk, another God-fearing,

and others are virtuous and pious, just, and ascetic.

Whenever I pass among them, I seem to be passing

through a valley whose fragrance is the perfume of those hermitages.

Its reaches are indeed fragrant with virtues,

like a scent wafting from its closely entwined growth.

The fragrance of virtue wafts from the mention of its people

and its inhabitants in every blessed gathering.

If I come to it one day, I loosen my reins,

as though in the Thebaid, upon couches:

couches of ascetic devotion, their bedding made of virtues,

their cushions, the righteousness of sovereign perfection.

The light of those hermitages among humankind is like

the full moon's radiance in a night dark with sin.

How wondrous the dwellers of these abodes! It is as though,

when I am among them, I am among angels.

Whoever seeks to replace them with others

is like one who trades silver for lead.

    وما دونهم كالدون تحت السنابك

    They are the root of piety, old and new;

and all beneath them is as the lowly beneath hooves.

At the Jordan of the Son of God I stood in praise,

beside its river, moved by its ever-renewed glory.

How many souls among them have spilled their blood!

Blessed the blood shed, and blessed the shedder!

Marvel at a soul whose triumph is the reward for its own slaying,

singled out apart from murderous souls.

And a hermitage on Mount Lebanon has ennobled it,

where I left a heart that would not leave it.

For in every cedar trunk I see

a temple there, as beautiful as couches.

O temple, whose beauty is like an image

raised in a temple at Darank!

And beneath it lies the Holy Valley, fertile

with water, fruits, and abundant hermitages.

    يعارضهم فيه صفوفُ ملائك

    Its monks there are ranks of angels;

ranks of angels face them there.

How often its monks have exposed a denier's deceit,

yet he never divulges a secret.

And how many a vice the penitent has destroyed there,

and it did not perish until he was no longer perishing.

His two hands have possessed every virtue

in a valley where the valley itself is the greatest possessor.

It is the great Garden and its Paradise, whose

abode every blessed one longs for.

O visitor seeking fellowship with its people,

hold fast to it, if you seek the reward of sharing.

Rise, for the sluggard in pursuit of the heights

is condemned like an undutiful heretic and a liar.

It befits the diligent man to clothe himself in piety,

provided he does not rest from his devotion.

He chews the sweet words of God; indeed,

God's words are sweet in the chewer's throat,

as praise of the Virgin Mary is sweet among humankind

to her praiser, blessed in praising her.

For she has become her people's physician,

and what a healer, curing every debilitating ill!

At her door is a company of petitioners, and her bounty

encompasses souls that have fallen into peril.

O my lady, I stand at your door,

and I am the more deserving of your bounty; so bless me.
