منا القلوب بإيمان وبرهانِ
I remember great Rome, which had captured
My covenant with death, the sublimest,
Our hearts through faith and proof.
Has captured hearts with faith and proof.

من خارصيني له معنى بإمعان
There I saw death's messenger, cast
In it I saw the messenger of death spilling forth
From zinc, with a meaning discerned through close reflection.
From my ribs, with meaning in his gaze.

مرَكَّبٌ وضعُها تركيبَ إنسان
It had been fashioned into a body from bare plates,
Formed of bare planks his body's wrought,
Assembled in the form of a human being.
Assembled, its composition like a man's.

A figure, with no ear to hear us
A figure, yet no ear to hear us
When we cast off a life that is wholly transient.
When we cast off a life, all ephemera.

Blind, with no eye to look upon us
Blind, no eye to look on us
In death's abasement, within the folds of shrouds.
In death's humiliation, shrouded in linen.

It appeared, with no heart to pity us
Appeared, yet no heart to pity us
Amid the pains of souls and bodies.
In the throes of spirits and bodies in pain.

بكفِّه لحصاد الخلق أمران
So it was the cruelest foe, come to take vengeance,
So he was the cruelest foe to come, avenging
With two things in its hand for reaping creation.
With his palm the harvest of creation, a dual edict.
