Jesus came from heaven's throne, for indeed

he came to us a stranger in a mantle of flesh.

نَسِي ملائكةً تعنو بخدمته

ومدحِه وبثوب الإتِّضاع وفَدْ

ومدحِه وبثوب الإتِّضاع وفَدْ

He forgot the angels bowing in his service

and praising him, and arrived in humility's robe.

معلِّماً غُربةً قد زانها شَرفاً

معلِّماً غُربةً قد زانها شَرفاً

دَلٌّ كما شانَها كبرٌ يُريك نكدْ

دَلٌّ كما شانَها كبرٌ يُريك نكدْ

Teaching a life of exile, adorned with honor

by graceful bearing, just as pride has marred it and shows you misery.

دع يا غريباً شعار الكبر منخرقاً

دع يا غريباً شعار الكبر منخرقاً

ثم ابعدِ العقلَ عن شرٍّ إليهِ شردْ

ثم ابعدِ العقلَ عن شرٍّ إليهِ شردْ

O stranger, leave the garment of pride in tatters.

Then turn the mind away from evil toward which it strayed.

صُن غربةً حزتَها في شوطِ رهبنةٍ

صُن غربةً حزتَها في شوطِ رهبنةٍ

بالإنفراد وكن بالكدِّ مثل أسدْ

بالإنفراد وكن بالكدِّ مثل أسدْ

Guard the exile you gained in the course of monastic life

through solitude, and be like a lion in toil.

دع الأقارب والأتراب في شغلٍ

دع الأقارب والأتراب في شغلٍ

ثم احذر الإثم فالشيطان تحت رَصَدْ

ثم احذر الإثم فالشيطان تحت رَصَدْ

Leave relatives and peers to their occupations.

Then beware of sin, for Satan is under watch.

ذر فكر إبليس إذ يغويك هاجسُه

ذر فكر إبليس إذ يغويك هاجسُه

والنفسُ أمارةٌ لا تستشيرُ أحدْ

والنفسُ أمارةٌ لا تستشيرُ أحدْ

Abandon Iblis's thought when his whisper leads you astray.

And the soul is imperious: it consults no one.

إقطع صديقاً وصل مولىً كَفِلتَ به

إقطع صديقاً وصل مولىً كَفِلتَ به

واعص الأنام وطِع ربّاً ثناك حمدْ

واعص الأنام وطِع ربّاً ثناك حمدْ

Cut off a friend, and cleave to a master for whom you stood surety.

And disobey humankind, and obey a Lord who commended your praise.

لا تبدينْ حسباً يسمو ولا نسباً

لا تبدينْ حسباً يسمو ولا نسباً

يعلو ولا شرفاً يزهو بغير أمدْ

يعلو ولا شرفاً يزهو بغير أمدْ

Do not display lofty standing, nor a lineage

that rises high, nor honor that flourishes without end.

أشدد نطاق التواضعْ إن فطنت به

أشدد نطاق التواضعْ إن فطنت به

وشمر الساق واعلم من يجُدَّ وجدْ

وشمر الساق واعلم من يجُدَّ وجدْ

Tighten humility's girdle, if you are mindful of it,

and bare your shin, and know: whoever strives finds.
