- أبغضوه لا لذنبThey hated him, not for any fault,
- أتتنا مع الركبان أخبار فاضلWith the caravan-riders came tidings of a man of learning,
- أتطلب الحقيقهDo you seek the truth,
- أتى منك يا فخر الأوان وزينةFrom you has come, O pride of the age and adornment of
- أجز لنا يا من نرى طرفهGrant us, O you whose gaze we see
- أجزتك أيها المولى بما فيI authorize you, O master, to transmit what is in
- أجزتك بابن السراة الأولىI have authorized you, O son of those noble men
- أجزتك في فنون العلم طراI have granted you authorization in all branches of knowledge;
- أجزتك يا عبد الرحيم بكل ماI have authorized you, O Abd al-Rahim, to transmit all that
- أجيء إليكم إن شاء ربيI shall come to you, if my Lord wills.
- أحمدك اللهم ذا الإفضالI praise You, O God, possessor of bounty,
- أخذتما الديوان من طاقتيI took from my power the treasury
- أدكرى حبيب أبرزت دمية القصرHas the palace's fair idol brought forth a memory of a beloved?
- أدم علينا النعماLet blessings remain upon us.
- أدم علينا نعمكSustain Your blessings upon us.
- إذا أثنى عليك فتى بما لاIf a young man praises you for what you are not
- إذا أجبت دعائيIf You answer my prayer
- إذا أجبت دعائي فأنتIf you answer my prayer,
- إذا أعوز المرء الصعود إلى التيIf a man cannot ascend to that height
- إذا تذكرت سوح نجدWhen I remember the open grounds of Najd,
- إذا جاش بحر الحشر كانت سفائنيWhen the sea of the Gathering surges, my ships—the
- إذا رضي الرحمن عني فكل منIf the All-Merciful is pleased with me, then everyone
- إذا رضي الله عن عبدهIf God is pleased with His servant,
- إذا رضي الله عني فقدIf God is pleased with me, then surely
- إذا شغفت نفس الفتى بالمعارفWhen a young man's soul is enamored of knowledge,
- إذا قبل الله مني الدعاIf God accepts my prayer
- إذا كانت العقبى لديك كما أشاIf the final outcome with you is as I wish,
- إذا كلب عوى لي من عدائIf a dog among my enemies howls at me,
- إذا كنت في دنياك والدين تابعاIf, in your worldly life and religion, you follow
- إذا كنت في علم الأصول موافقاIf, in the science of theological principles, you agree
- إذا لم تطق للخطوب اصطباراIf you cannot patiently endure grave trials,
- إذا نظمت سموط الجمع قوماIf the strands of a gathering string together a company
- أراني قد ضعفت فليت شعريI see that I have grown weak—would that I knew
- أرى عمر هذا الشخص في الأصل قدرهI reckon this person's lifespan, in its original measure, to be
- أريد إجمام ذهني عن مباحثةI wish to rest my mind from scholarly discussion
- أريد نشر السننI wish to spread the Prophetic traditions
- أسائل عن أنساب قوم عرفتهمI ask about the ancestry of people I have come to know;
- أستعين الله جلI seek God's help—exalted
- أستغفر الله ألفي ألف واحدةI seek God's forgiveness two million times,
- أستودع الله سيفا جردوه علىI entrust to God a sword they have unsheathed against
- أشكر ذا الجلالI thank the Possessor of Majesty,
- أصخ لمقال فهو ردء الرباق وحلهاGive ear to a discourse—an aid with bonds and their untying.
- أصعدت مرتفعا إلى أوج السماDid you rise aloft to the zenith of the sky,
- أطل عمري حتى أرى الحق ظاهراProlong my life until I see the truth manifest,
- أطلقت دمعي بعد تقييد الهوىYou released my tears after passion was bound,
- أعد نظرا في محكم الذكر إنهLook again into the clear text of the Remembrance; indeed,
- أعطى من الإنعام أضعاف ماI am granted, in bounty, many times what
- أعطيتني فوق آمالي فصنه عنYou have given me more than I hoped for; preserve it from
- أعلى الذي ألقى طلبت شهوديHave you demanded my witnesses to what I endure?
- أعن ذكرها يسلو الفؤاد المبلبلCan the distraught heart cease remembering her?
- أعني به الحسن بن يحيى من غداI mean by this al-Hasan ibn Yahya, who has become
- أقلام أندلس وحمير بعدهاThe scripts of al-Andalus, and of Himyar after it,
- أقول بعد الحمدI say, after praise
- أقول بعد حمد منI say, after praising the One who
- أقول من بعد حمد والصلاة علىI say, after praise and blessings upon
- أكثر ذا العام صرت في سفرFor most of this year I have been traveling,
- أكؤوس مترعات من عقارAre these cups brimming with wine,
- ألا إن أيام الحياة كأنهاBehold, the days of life are like
- ألا إنما العيش في أربعBehold, life lies in just four things,
- ألا بلغا عني الحسين بأننيO you two, tell al-Husayn on my behalf that I
- ألا بلغا عني العماد بأنهاListen, you two: tell al-ʿImād on my behalf that
- ألا فادعوا لي بارك الله فيكماAh, pray for me, you two—may God bless you both.
- ألا قل لشيخ المسلمين محمدLo, say to Muhammad, the shaykh of the Muslims,
- ألا قل لمولانا الإمام مناخناLo, tell our lord, the Imam: our encampment
- ألا ليت شعري بعد طول افتراقناAh, would that I knew, after our long separation,
- ألا ليت شعري هل أرى وجه صبيتيI wonder will I see my daughter's face
- ألا هكذا من يروم الفخاراBehold, thus acts one who seeks glory,
- الأمر لله وحدهAuthority belongs to God alone.
- الجواب الحق في هذا بلاThe true answer to this, without
- الجواب الذي أراه صواباThe answer that I deem correct
- الحمد لله علىPraise be to God for
- الحمد لله على كل حالPraise be to God in every state,
- الدر أهداه لي في المنظر البهجIs it pearls he has given me, so delightful to behold,
- الرازق الله فاترك الطمعاThe Provider is God, so abandon greed.
- الزم الانقباض إن انبساطKeep to reserve, for the openness of the
- العلم ما أوصل أربابهKnowledge is what leads its adepts
- الله در فتى علاGod bless a youth who rose high,
- إلهي كن يا إلهي معينيMy God, be, O my God, my helper;
- إلى الدرعية الغراء تسريIt journeys by night to radiant Dir'iyyah,
- إلى متى ذا الهم والغمHow long will this worry and grief last?
- إمام البهاليل الألى سبقوا إلىThe leader of the noble lords who raced ahead to
- أمرت إلهي بالمكارم كلهاYou commanded all noble virtues, my God,
- أمرهف لحظه سلهHas he drawn his glance's keen blade
- أمنية خولتني بعدهاOne wish you granted me, and after it,
- إن أفلس الذهن فقسه علىIf the mind goes bankrupt, compare it to
- إن الرياسة لا تبقى وإن بقيتIndeed, sovereignty does not endure—and should it endure,
- إن اللقا أفضل إن كان فيIndeed, meeting is preferable if it is for
- إن الليالي في المخادر قد غدتIndeed, the nights in secluded chambers have become
- إن المرا فعلاتهIndeed, the deeds of disputation
- إن امرءا عادى إمام الهدىIndeed, a man who bore enmity toward the imam of guidance—
- إن رضى كل الورى لا مراSurely, winning all humanity’s approval—beyond dispute—
- إن شبت من قبل أترابي فلا عجبIf I have turned gray before my peers, it is no wonder.
- إن غضبوا جهلا لما قلتهIf, in ignorance, they grow angry at what I said
- إن لله في العباد رجالاIndeed, God has men among His servants
- إن لم تجبني فعدلIf you do not answer me, that is justice;
- إن لم ترعه صوارمي وأسنتيIf my swords and tongue do not restrain him,
- إن لم يكن لي قيام صدقIf I do not take a sincere stand
- إن لموكا علي مكرمةIndeed, Mocha has done me a kindness,
- إن لي نفسا تسامىإن لي نفسا تسامىIndeed, I have a soul that soars;
- إن من ترضى خلائقهIndeed, one whose character wins approval
- أنا أطلب التعجيل منك وقدI ask you to hasten, and I have
- أنا المفرط حقاI am truly remiss.
- أنعمت بالنعم التيYou have bestowed the blessings that
- إنما الدنيا ممرThis world is only a passage;
- إني امرؤ جدي لمجدي يشهدI am a man; my grandfather bears witness to my glory.
- أهديل ورقاء الأراك أراكاO cooing of the gray dove of the arak tree, I see you
- أهوى الذي يهوى فإن عن ماI love what he loves; and if something arises
- أيا رب هل من نصرة لشريعةO Lord, is there any aid for the sacred law
- أيا ليالي الوصال عوديOh nights of union, return to us
- أيا ملكا تفتن في العطاياO king who excelled in giving gifts,
- بابن الكرام ومن هم في رتبةO son of the noble, and of those whose rank
- بالله يا علم الهدىBy God, O banner of guidance,
- بحث تجمع فيه كل شاردةAn inquiry in which every stray matter gathered,
- بدر بأفلاك البلاغة طالعA full moon rising in the spheres of eloquence,
- بشارة قد وصلتGood news has indeed arrived
- بضع وخمسون مرتFifty-odd years have passed
- بعثت نحوي زادك الله منYou sent my way—may God grant you more—from
- بلغتني سبعين عاما فلاYou have brought me to seventy years, so I cannot
- بلى سوف ننجى شاكِرِين لِربناYes, we shall be delivered, grateful to our Lord
- تأس ولا تأس من عضةTake solace, and do not grieve over a bite;
- تراه عن وداد الخل حاداYou see that he has turned away from a close friend's affection,
- تروم نفسي أن يدوم الوصالMy soul longs for union to endure
- تشيع الأقوام في عصرناThe Shiism of the people in our age
- تعاضدتم بغيا لنشر المظالمYou joined forces in aggression to spread injustices,
- تقدم الصثحبة يا ذا النهىBefore companionship, O man of understanding,
- تكدر القلب من من أمورThe heart has been troubled by—by matters
- ثلاثة قل أن تراهاThree things you rarely see
- جسم أقام بإبA body has settled in Ibb,
- جفن المعارف من فراقك سافحThe eyelid of knowledge streams with tears at your parting.
- جمال الجلال وفرد الكمالO beauty of majesty and paragon of perfection,
- جملة ماجاء من الحروفThe full set of particles that occur
- حتى متى ذا البين يا من غداHow long must this separation last, O you with whom
- حثوا المطي إلى ربا صنعاUrge the mounts on toward the hills of Sana'a.
- حسدوا علومي خاملا فأتيح ليThey envied my learning while I was obscure; then I was granted
- حفظ اله علاكاMay God preserve your eminence,
- حلف الفتى من غير إستحلافA young man's swearing without being asked to swear
- حملت من الأحباب عرفا كلماIt carried a fragrance from the loved ones; whenever
- خبرية حالية محكيةA predicative clause, a circumstantial clause, a quoted clause;
- خود رداح ربحلهA tender young beauty, broad-hipped, tall and full-bodied.
- خير البلاد بأسرها صنعاSana'a is the finest of all lands
- دامت معاليك يا نجل الكرام كماMay your lofty virtues endure, O scion of the noble, just as
- درر تلوح من السطورPearls gleam from the lines,
- دع عنك أمرا إن نهضتLeave aside a matter that, if you set out
- دع عنك صنعا هذهLeave off this crafting, for it but accuses
- دمت رب الإصدار والإيرادMay you remain master of sending forth and bringing in,
- دمت يا مركز المكارم والفخرMay you endure, O center of noble virtues and glory,
- ذخيرة أخبار الجزيرة قد غدتThe treasury of al-Jazira’s chronicles has now come
- ذهب الظلم والهرجOppression and turmoil have gone.
- رب إني مستعينMy Lord, I seek help
- ربع العمر بالصبا قد تقضىA quarter of life has already passed in youth;
- ربنا اشهد لي عليهمOur Lord, bear witness against them.
- ربنا أنفذ بي الحقOur Lord, make the truth prevail through me,
- ردوا فؤادي ما يعيش الفتىGive back my heart—the young man cannot live
- رعايا اليمن الميمونThe subjects of blessed Yemen
- روائح الخير قد أظلتThe fragrances of goodness have cast their shade.
- روضة الآداب وافتThe Garden of Letters has come to
- رؤياك للفاروق تأويلهاYour vision of al-Faruq—its interpretation is
- زادوا لنا بضع عشر بعد ستيناThey added for us ten and a few more beyond sixty,
- زر لمعروف سلفVisit for a kindness bestowed before,
- سحت دموعي في الخدود نيابةMy tears streamed down my cheeks by proxy—
- سددت الأذن عن داعي التصابيI shut my ear to the call of youthful dalliance.
- سعوا لارعوا في جلب كل مضرةThey strove—may they find no protection—to bring about every harm.
- سلام على السودي بحر الحقائقPeace be upon al-Sudi, the sea of truths,
- سلام على أهل الصفا والحقائقPeace upon the people of purity and realities,
- سلام على تلك الدفاتر إن ليPeace be upon those books; indeed, I have
- سلام على شيخ الفواطم عن يدPeace upon the elder of the Fatimas, delivered by hand,
- سلام على صنعا وإن قرب العهدPeace upon Sana'a, though the last encounter was recent.
- سلام على عز المعالي محمدPeace upon Muhammad, the glory of lofty virtues,
- سلوا الناس من قد قام مثل مقاميAsk the people: who has taken a stand like mine,
- شباب مر في قيل وقالYouth passed in “it was said” and “he said,”
- شبهت مولانا الإمام وسيفهI likened our lord, the Imam, and his sword,
- شغل الفؤاد بحاجةThe heart is preoccupied with a need,
- شفاء أمير المؤمنين هو الذيThe recovery of the Commander of the Faithful is what
- شيخنا دمت في النعيم المقيمOur sheikh, may you remain in enduring bliss,
- صبر الفتى مصيبته إذاA young man's patience with his calamity, when
- صبرا أبا أحمد فالموت لاBe patient, Abu Ahmad, for death cannot
- صدر الجواب بقيت يا نجل الألىThe answer has come, you remain O son of the exalted
- صدرت مخبرة عن الأمر الذيIt came forth, reporting on the matter that
- صغت الدراري أم عقد من الدررHave you fashioned the shining stars, or a necklace of pearls?
- طال صبري فمتى إسعادهاLong has my patience lasted; when will she bring me joy?
- طالع الديوان إن رمتRead the poetry collection, if you wish
- طبل شيطاني ومزمار الهوىMy devil's drum and the flute of passion
- طلعت علينا طلعة الشمس ضحوةYou rose upon us like the sun rising in the forenoon.
- طمعتم يا ويحكم معشراYou enticed—woe to you—a people
- ظني بربي مليحMy opinion of my Lord is good;
- عثور الجد جد به أناسSome people strove in earnest over fortune’s stumbling;
- عجبا أين العقولHow astonishing—where are the minds?
- عز الهدى دام لنا منك ماO glory of guidance, may we always have from you what
- عصى أبو العالم وهو الذيThe father of humankind disobeyed—he who
- علام وفيم غدا يضجرFor what, and why, has he grown discontented?
- علم الدين من غدا باتفاقO ʿAlam al-Dīn, who has become, by common consent,
- علم الفتى إن لم يكن ذا ورعThe young man's knowledge, if he is not pious,
- على البر نجل البر مني تحيةTo the virtuous man, son of a virtuous man, a greeting from me,
- على العالم البحر خدن الكمالUpon the ocean-like scholar, companion of perfection,
- على العلم العلوي مني تحيةUpon the heavenly banner, a greeting from me,
- على عصر الشبيبة كل حينUpon the days of youth, at every hour,
- علي لله إن أعطيت مقدرةIt is my duty to God, if I am granted power,
- علي لله عهد لا يكدرهI owe God a pledge that will not be sullied
- فارقت حلمي إن لم أرض ظامئةMay I lose my good sense if I fail to slake a thirst
- فالعطف لم يأت في إضمار تابعهSo explanatory apposition does not occur with a pronominal dependent.
- فإن تنج منها تنج من ذي عظيمةFor if you escape it, you escape a mighty ordeal;
- فذهبت والأحشاء من وجد بهاSo I departed; from the longing within my breast,
- فقل لأخيك البر إن محمداSo tell your righteous brother that Muhammad
- فكرت في عملي وفي أعماليI reflected on my work and on my deeds,
- فلا وحقك ما أنفك آونةI will not cease struggling
- فؤادك يا بن ودي من حديدYour heart, O son of my love, is made of iron;
- في معقل صار النجوم لهIn a stronghold, the stars have become
- قالوا أتيت مؤخراThey said, "You have come late."
- قالوا فريق الرفض قد أرجفواThey said, “The Rāfiḍa faction has spread rumors
- قالوا فلان عظموا حقهThey said, “So-and-so—honor his due,
- قالوا يعاديك جميع الورىThey said, “All humankind is hostile to you,
- قبح الله همة تتسامىMay God make hideous a beard that holds itself above
- قبيح لا يماثله قبيحHideous—no hideous thing can match it—
- قد شققت الطبل والمزمار ماYou have split the drum and the reed pipe; no one
- قد صح إجماع جميع الورىThe consensus of all humankind is indeed established:
- قد كنت أرضى بنزول القضاI had been content with fate's descent—
- قد نلت منك جزيلاI have received much from you,
- قدمت خير مقدمMost welcome is your arrival,
- قدموا لله بعضاOffer a portion to God,
- قريض يحاكي الدر نظم عقدهVerse like pearls, its necklace strung
- قل لابن يحيى فليكن عالماTell Ibn Yahya: let him be aware
- قل لإمام الزمنTell the imam of the age
- قل لعلي نالاSay to Ali, who has attained
- قل للإمام ابن الإمامSay to the Imam, son of the Imam,
- قل لوادي الظهر حياه الحياSay to the valley of al-Ẓahr—may the rain greet it—
- قلب تقلب في فنونA heart that turned among the forms
- قلد الجيد وهو رب اجتهادHe adorned the neck—he, a master of independent reasoning
- قني شر أوهامي ومن تفضلاProtect me from the evil of my delusions, and graciously bestow favor,
- قولا لإبراهيم نجل محمدSay, you two, to Ibrahim, son of Muhammad,
- كأن وجه النهر إذ حفت بهThe face of the river, ringed by the trees
- كأن وجود هذا بعد هذاAs though the presence of one after another,
- كأنما الأغصان إذ أحدقتIt is as though the boughs, when they encircled
- كذا فليكن رزء العلى والعوالمSuch should be the loss to glory and the worlds;
- كقطيفة خضراء قد نثرت بهاLike a green velvet cloth upon which have been scattered
- كل العلوم فلا تصخ لمكابرAll the sciences—heed no obstinate disputant—
- كل يوم أسائل الغفاراEvery day I beseech the All-Forgiving,
- كم ذا له من مننHow many favors he has bestowed
- كن ناسكا تبتلاBe an ascetic, wholly devoted,
- كيف الوصول إلى الحقيقهHow can the Truth be reached?
- لا أترك الإلحاحاI will not cease my pleading,
- لا ترهب الباطل إن كنت فيDo not fear falsehood if you are in
- لا تشتغل بملبس فكل ذيDo not concern yourself with dress; for every man of
- لا تغضبن لذم من أخي حسدNever be angered by censure from an envious man.
- لا تنكروني إن ثملت فللهوىDo not reproach me if I grow drunk, for love has
- لا تنكري انحرافي عن بني زمنيDo not deny my deviation from the people of my time
- لا در درك ماذا في اغترابك منMay no good come of you! In your life abroad, what
- لا زالت السحب على مشرعهMay the clouds over Mashraʿah never cease
- لا قدس الله أرواح الروافض ماMay God never sanctify the souls of the Rafidites, so long as
- لبس الروض بروداThe garden donned striped cloaks,
- لست أسوى قط شيئاI am worth nothing at all,
- لست أهلا لهذه النعمI am not worthy of these blessings.
- لعلها أن تنجلي لعلهاPerhaps it will clear away—perhaps it will.
- لعمرك ما جانبت في الحق لي رهطاBy your life, I have not shunned a clan of mine in matters of truth,
- لك البشارة قد قالوا الرحيل غداGood tidings for you: they have said departure is tomorrow,
- لك الويل لا فاجر تتقىWoe to you! You are no villain to be feared,
- لله در المقبلي فإنهBy God! Dar is an ocean, deep and just
- لله در بشير بالقبول أتىPraise be to God; bringer of glad tidings has come
- لله درك يا فرد الكمال وياGod bless you, O peerless one in perfection, and O
- لله في خلقه ما شاء من نظرGod regards His creation however He wills.
- لم أزل أرقب وعداI have never ceased awaiting a promise
- لم يكون النوح ياورWhy should there be mourning, O dove,
- لو كان لي كل لسان لماIf every tongue were mine, I could not
- لولا ثلاث هن أقصى المنىWere it not for three things that are the highest of hopes,
- لي همة لا تشتكي إن نالهاI have a proud spirit that, if harm befalls it, makes no complaint
- ليت شعري والأماني تخطرI wish I knew what tidings these rumors bear
- ليهنكم دار المسرة إنهاMay the house of joy delight you, for it is
- ما اسم رباعي بهWhat four-letter name has within it
- ما الحادثات الكاربات تصدنيDistressing calamities do not deter me.
- ما حال من يطلبه ربهWhat is the plight of one whose Lord asks him
- ما طال ما حررتهWhat I have written is not long;
- ما عز ذو الباطل كلا ولاThe bearer of falsehood has never known honor—no, never.
- ما كنت أعلم أن العلم عندهمI did not know that knowledge, in their eyes,
- ما لبسك الديباج والتاج معNeither your wearing brocade and a crown, together with
- ما للطعام وللثياب أتيتهIt was neither for food nor clothes that I came to him,
- ما نظرت عيناي كالأهجرNever have my eyes beheld the like of al-Ahjar,
- متى أرى الحق فوق باطلهمWhen shall I see truth above their falsehood,
- متى أرى الحق يصفو من تكدرهWhen shall I see truth grow clear of its murk,
- متى يكون بروز الراس للناسWhen will the head emerge before the people,
- محب جفاني مرة ثم زارنيA lover once shunned me, then visited me.
- محمد قطع الآمال ممنMuhammad, sever your hopes in those
- مرح الجياد مع رقص الهجان كذاThe frolicking of steeds, with the dancing of noble camels, and likewise
- مسائل من يحررها نهاراThe questions of one who formulates them by day
- مكحولة الحدقات وطفاKohl-darkened of eye, long-lashed—
- ملك الملوك أنلني المأمولاO King of kings, grant me what I hope for.
- من أكثر المزح دعا كل منWhoever jokes too much invites everyone who
- من خالفت أقواله أفعالهWhoever's words contradict his deeds—
- من دونها يا عمر وخز الرماحBetween you and her, O ʿAmr, lie spear-thrusts;
- من ذا يطيق لربهWho can render to his Lord
- من رام في الدنيا رضاء العالمWhoever seeks, in this world, the approval of everyone,
- من غدا مستحكم الطمعWhoever becomes firmly gripped by greed
- من قدر الله له الخير نالHe for whom God has decreed good attains
- مهب رياح سده بجناحHe blocked the winds’ passage with a wing,
- مولاي ذا الكرامهMy master, possessor of honor,
- نجل الأئمة فخرها وعمادهاO scion of the imams, their pride and mainstay,
- نخرج أو ندخل في مصرناWe leave or enter our city,
- نداء لأهل الكشف في كل موطنA call to the people of unveiling in every place
- نداء لكل الناس فالأمر أعظمA call to all people, for the matter is grave;
- نصر وتأييد من الرحمنVictory and support from the All-Merciful
- نظام أراه كروح النظامA poem I see as the soul of poetry,
- نظام من الدر الثمين فرائدهA strand whose choice gems are precious pearls;
- نظام هو الدر الثمين منضداA composition—precious pearls arranged in a strand—
- نظام يا ابن ودي أم لآليIs it a string of verse, son of my affection, or pearls
- نظام يحاكي الدر أهدته نحوناA string of verse resembling pearls, offered to us
- نظم كما الزهر أو كالزهر رونقهVerse whose luster is like the bright stars, or like blossoms,
- نعم خولنيها خالقيBlessings my Creator has bestowed upon me—
- هب الناس قالوا باتفاق بأننيSuppose people unanimously say that I am
- هب أن بدر التم يوما يأفلSuppose the full moon should one day set,
- هب لي يا رب قسطاGrant me, O Lord, a share
- هذا السحاب وبرقه الخفاقThis cloud, with its flashing lightning,
- هذا مقام العائذThis is the station of one seeking refuge,
- هذه الدنيا بلا ريبThis world is, without doubt,
- هذه ست وستون سنهThese are sixty-six years,
- هذي بيوت حل فيها القاصرThese are verses in which the intransitive verb has settled.

- هوت العقيق وما هوت فكأنهاShe fell for al-ʿAqīq, yet did not fall; as though she
- وإذا تضايقت الأمور على الفتىAnd when affairs close in upon a young man,
- وإذا دهتك وساوس أو حيرةAnd when whisperings or bewilderment beset you,
- وإذا ما المرء جرى طلقاAnd whenever a man races at full speed
- وأسعفني دهري بكل مطالبيAnd fortune came to my aid in all my aspirations,
- وأصعب ما يلاقي المرء شغلAnd the hardest thing a person encounters is an occupation
- وافت إلي من المقام الأشرفIt came to me from the noblest station,
- وافى عطاء أمير المؤمنين فلاThe bounties of the Commander of the Faithful continue
- والله لاأسأل الإنسان عن صلةI swear by God, I do not ask people about a relationship
- والنفس والشيطان بالAnd the soul and Satan, through the
- وإن حياة والممات ختامهاAnd indeed, a life whose end is death
- وإن من يكتم علما يعلمهAnd indeed, whoever conceals knowledge he knows—
- وجوه سوء إن غلى مرجلFaces of evil—if a cauldron boils
- وصل الدواء فدمت ياربThe medicine has arrived; may you live on, O
- وصل النظام بقيت يا نجل الأولىThe verse has arrived; may you live on, O scion of those
- وطالب الدنيا بعلAnd one who seeks this world through knowledge
- وغاية ما حصلته من مباحثيAnd the extent of what I have gained from my debates
- وفود حبيب أم ورود عهادIs it the arrival of a beloved, or the coming of renewed rains?
- وكم من طواغيت يجر زمامهاAnd how many false gods have their reins pulled
- وكيف يرجي الفتح والمنح بعدماAnd how can he hope for divine opening and bounty, after
- ولست بممحض ودا لشخصAnd I offer no one unalloyed affection,
- ولكن إذا جزت الصراط فإننيBut if I cross the Bridge, then I
- ولو كان لي ملء البسيطة ألسنAnd even if I had tongues enough to fill the earth,
- وليت الحكم خمسا وهي خمسI held judicial office for five years—a fifth
- وليت الحكم فوق الأربعيناI held judicial office for more than forty years,
- وليس يزول الضر إلا بكلفةAnd harm does not go away except at a cost;
- وما ذات أفراح جياع بعشهاAnd no mother bird with hungry fledglings in her nest—
- ومتى أقوم بشكر ما خولتنيAnd when can I give due thanks for what you have bestowed on me,
- ومن أخلص الأعمال لله لم يبلAnd whoever devotes his deeds sincerely to God is untroubled,
- ومن جار في الحكم فهو امرؤAnd whoever is unjust in judgment is a man
- ومن فاته نيل الغنى في شبابهAnd whoever fails to attain wealth in his youth,
- ومن يقل أنا أناAnd whoever says, “I, I,”
- ويوم شبام قد رأيت مواعظاAnd on the day of Shibam, I saw admonitions
- يا أحمد بن محمدO Ahmad, son of Muhammad,
- يا أهل صنعا وإن كانت أحبتناO people of Sana'a, though our loved ones are
- يا أيها المخلطO you who mix good with evil,
- يا بدر قد أطلعت في فلك العلىO Badr (full moon), you have raised in the sphere of eminence
- يا بن الأولى في شانهمO son of those for whom
- يا بن البهاليل والأطواد من مضرO son of the noble chiefs and towering mountains of Mudar,
- يا جاهلا في نصر سنة أحمدO you ignorant in championing Ahmad's Sunna,
- يا حبذا كلامO what excellent words
- يا ديار الكبس حياك الحياO dwellings of al-Kibs, may the rain greet you
- يا رب زدني نعماO Lord, grant me more blessings
- يا رب قد حدثتني النفس أن لهاO Lord, my soul has told me that it has
- يا رب قد ضاق علي السبيلO my Lord, the way has indeed narrowed for me,
- يا رب لا تقبضني قبل ماO my Lord, do not take my soul before
- يا رب لاطف ولديO my Lord, be gentle with my child,
- يا رب من ذا يجير من ذاO my Lord, who grants refuge? Who
- يا زينة الدهر وعين الوجودO adornment of time and eye of existence,
- يا علم لم أطلبك للنكرO knowledge, I did not seek you for wrongdoing,
- يا غائبا بعده السلوان ما حضراO absent one, after whose departure no solace came,
- يا قدس الله أسرارا لأخيارOh, may God sanctify the inner secrets of the virtuous,
- يا معربا في قوله لاحناO you, correct in speech, yet erring
- يا مفردا في الكمال أضحىO peerless one in perfection, who has come
- يا من رأى جلسا أتى جلساO you who saw a companion come to a lord,
- يا من له في المعالي أرفع السندO you whose standing among lofty honors is the highest,
- يا من له من ذهنهO you whose mind gives you
- يا ناقدا لكلام ليس يفههO critic of words you do not understand,
- يا نجل أحمد حياك الإله ولاO son of Ahmad, may God bless you, and may you never
- يا نفسي الأمارهO my blaming soul
- يا نيري فلك العلياء قد طلعتO two luminaries of glory’s sphere, there have risen
- يا وحشت للغريب في البلدOh, the stranger’s loneliness in the land far-
- يجاهرني العدو بكل نكرThe enemy openly affronts me with every outrage,
- يجب حذف متعلقات الظروفThe governors of adverbials must be omitted,
- يشرف المرء ويعظمA man gains honor, and greater grows
- يقلون هذا عالم المصر والذيThey say, “This is the city's scholar, and the one who
- يقولون دق قد عراك فقلت لاThey say, “A wasting sickness has afflicted you,” so I said, “No!”
- يقولون لي قد حزت فوق الذي بهThey say to me, "You have surpassed the one by whom
