To the virtuous man, son of a virtuous man, a greeting from me,

    Wafting fragrance, scented with gladness.

Its fragrance anoints the sleeves of learning,

And perfumes the expanses of noble virtues and glory.

And brings word to the pride of the Fatimas, adornment of the

Hashimites, outstripping the great men throughout time,

That a poem from him has arrived, as though it were

Strings of brilliant stars, or necklaces of pearls.

Through it the sun of eloquence rose; its vessel

Is the page, amid the night of lines of ink.

With it, Time's flank swayed, and for it danced

The fair maidens of the dwellings, and the meanings from the line.

So at times I see it as magic in a talisman's folds,

And at times I see it as intoxication in the line's script.

Yet it reached a young man already beset by manifold

Duties that kept him from verse and prose.

And a newcomer clouded the clarity of the watering places,

Assailing him from quarters he knows and knows not.

He copes with ordeals, heavy and prolonged,

And the writing of studies beyond counting.

So at times the litigants speak privately to him, and at others

The records harry him with folding and unfolding.

And how many a night its blackened coal turns white,

Yet the white of the sheets has not blackened by dawn.

The raven of parting flies from its nest, yet

The ink of the page does not leave that nest.

So perhaps, O son of the noblest, you will excuse

A young man who has lifted the veil from the faces of his excuse.
