أَمِ الدَّرارِي أَطَاعَتْهُ مِنَ الأَوَجِ
Is it pearls he has given me, so delightful to behold,
or have the brilliant stars obeyed him from their zenith?

Or are full moons rising within the folds of the page?
Or are suns coming to us unhindered?

Or a garden with which the clouds shook hands, so that
its boughs danced to serenade the thunder with lilting song?

Or is it verse, upon whose thread is strung
eloquence that raised it to the highest ranks?

حَقّاً فَعَنْ بحره التيار لا بعج
You say: glory has become confined to knowledge,
truly—so do not turn aside from its surging sea [last word uncertain].

Then he turned, singling out for mention the lowliest of those
who cannot swim in the surging ocean depths.

Glad tidings for you! Cast off what you have on, for indeed
you have been mentioned there, despite the crookedness in you.

Welcome to what I was unworthy to receive—
the words of one given glad news of relief after despair.

O son of the imams, may insights from you ever continue
to reach us, bearing the clearest proofs.

For how many an elusive insight have others gained from you,
that lay behind an unparted veil!

You entered its gates before the respondent; and had he
sought entry on his own initiative, he would not have entered.

Whoever takes no joy in the gardens of knowledge
lives out his days with a joyless lot.

Whoever is not occupied with the religious sciences
remains all his life in straitness and distress.

Knowledge is the soul of lofty attainments; and if they are gained
without knowledge, they have neither soul nor lifeblood.

How many a youth the eye disdains, yet when
a difficult religious problem baffles you, he brings relief.

And many a youth whose appearance fills the eyes
cannot tell a meadow from confusion.
